Clearance for a Cal-27 T/2 ?
Chris Floyd2007-03-25 18:02 UTC
Anyone know what the total height (clearance) is on a Cal-27 T/2? Preferably an exact measurement from a previous owner that ran into a bridge, for example?? :-)
I've loaded my T/2 down with lots of stuff, so I'm maybe a few inches lower... Our marina owner is booting most of us out since he's converting the area into a condo / marina thing.... yuck...
Anyway, I'm looking at another slip - but I need to have bridge clearance of 45' ... which I suspect is not a problem, but I can't remember the whole Cal-27 "Tall Mast" versus "Shorter Mast" thing...
I'll take any info I can get on this - I prefer not to find out I'm too tall 'the hard way'. ;-)

Chris,
If you mean the bridge in Oriental, I made it through with about a foot to spare in my Cal 2-27.

Klaus,
Yes, the Oriental bridge is the exact one I'm concerned about. :-)
I think to ease my mind, I'll just run a tape measure up the main
halyard and drop the other end down through the porthole and line it up
with the waterline in the gallery sink drainhose... add a few feet for
error, and wind tides, etc...

One of the captains on our schooner, and a guy who taught math in his
career, admitted that he always gets nervous going under the Mackinaw
Bridge connecting Michigan's upper and lower peninsulas.
Intellectually, you know that all the 1000 foot freighters make it and
that we're far short of snagging, but the illusion is really powerful.

Hi, there are some numbers for a CAL T/2 at Bacon Sails in Annapolis.
http://www.baconsails.com/database/boatspec.php
I've never seen a measurement for mast pedestal to waterline.
Cheers

Dave, Bill, Randy, Eric, Kirk and whoever I might have missed in the
area.....
We've had a little adversity up this way, but still going to make a
wonderful Santa Cruz Island Trip this weekend.
I've been watching the weather and as of a few minutes ago and it looks very
promising for OUTSTANDING WEATHER throughout the weekend.
Sabine's Cal 25 lost it's mooring and came ashore and our buddy Mel has not
had time to get his 29 ready to go, so they've scratched. Chuck got tangled
up in a dirt bike and lost, so he may or may not make it....
Kurt Ford and Per Curtiss are due in Santa Barbara around supper time
Thursday Night and we plan on leaving for the Island Friday Morning. Dan
Casey will bring his Cal 9.2R and our friends and crew-mates are bringing
their Hans Cal-hristian 52 (free ice and hot showers... He he he)
The Santa Barbara Fleet wants to head for Pelicans. Are you guys up to it?
It's a little farther for you and a bit more on the wind, but I'm sure you
know how nice it is once there.
We will leave early Friday Morning.
How about a head count?

Hi David,
Footloose won't make this trip, but I'm looking forward to one later
this year. I'm in the middle of relocating the power panel and that lead
to seemingly infinite work. (Those interior battens look nice but it's
an erector set when they come out.) At the moment she's a workshop.
I am hoping to bring her to Santa Barbara this weekend for a stint so I
can make greater headway. Ventura isn't all that far, but it rules out
any mid-week efforts. And I owe my 10 year old son and his two best
buddies a boat-sleep-over belated bday present.
I'll give the list a heads-up if we're in SB. Maybe folks can stop by
for an adult beverage.
And I just took a look at your www site - nice work on Mariposa.

Hi, Reg. Bacon has the regular stick at 35' and the tall stick at 37'.
Add 4' to 4.5' for height of deck above the water, and throw in anything
on top of the mast like wind stuff and antennas. Without a tall VHF
antenna, 45' looks like a piece of cake.
DON'T FORGET THE TIDE!
Cheers

Thanks all for the info.
The lunar tide around Oriental, NC (Pamlico Sound / Neuse River) is a whopping 6 inches. The wind tide on the other hand can often be another story...
regular wind tide: http://www.towndock.net/harborcam_anim.shtml
extreme wind 'high-tide': http://www.towndock.net/harborcam_isabel.shtml :-)
Sounds like I'll be ok.... Thx again.
