New strut & shaft... what about the PSS shaft sealing system & Farymann?

greggsalisbury2007-04-10 14:55
I'm replacing the strut on our Cal 29. I'm also replacing the shaft. Fellow boaters are encouraging me to go to the PSS Shaft Seal. Okay, here's my question. We have the 12 hp A30 Farymann and you boaters that have this work horse know that this engine likes to jump around a lot. Do any of you that have the Farymann use the PSS shaft seal? Any thoughs or concerns with going away from the conventional stuffing box? Gregg & Dannae Cal 3-29 (#1008) Chaconne Everett, WA http://i7.tinypic.com/24ziwlg.jpg to… [at] aol.com

I have the same issue...broken strut and shaft replacement...can the shaft be removed with out cutting the shaft in two or dropping the rudder? In other words, with prop removed will the shaft squeeze past the rudder? My normal response is usually going to be "if it ain't broke, why fix it," but I know some folk who have installed the PSS and love it. My first impression was that it might not fit in the space allowed, but on scanning their web page I have changed my opinion. I have a really deep coupler on my boat that eats up a lot of space and only leaves about an inch gap. Mark, The answer is YES. Removing the prop alone should do it without cutting up the shaft, since it will flex some and your shaft log will be loose and the packing gland removed. The absolute worst case is to loosen and/or drop the strut. Since your strut is broken anyway, this is a no-brainer. On re-installation you assemble everything with the strut bedded but held loose and then tighten the strut after all is slipped in. A new shaft is not as expensive as you might think, though your original bronze shaft may be well worth saving. I think I paid about $150 for a new shaft from back east and another $80 or so to have the local machine shop face it for my new coupler and prop. A nautical machine shop can check your old shaft for true and clean and face it for a new coupler -- after carefully inspecting it for packing wear, pits, etc. There are hard technical rules for how much shaft can protrude from the rear of the cutless - relative to the size of the prop and length of the hub. If you violate them you will pay with increased movement and vibration. No prop is likely to hold a perfect balance forever. A good yard guy can help you with all of that and keep in mind that your original installation may no longer be valid if the prop has changed or the boat is re-powered. Hello First I agree with David if it works do not fix it or break it and cost lots money later. I would like to add a note about the Farryman A30 off Idle it should smooth out and not move very much at all. If the motor shakes a lot the engine mounts can be the problem. If the engine mounts are bad the shaft coupling of 4" rubber good break and stress the strut. One last point my motor has a Martec prop if the prop has fishing line or marine growth or something to cause a out balance condition the motor will shake more than normal. The PSS shaft seal will move and how much can it take ask them. Regards Scott 2-29 Coyote Pt SFBAY greggsalisbury <to… [at] aol.com> wrote: I'm replacing the strut on our Cal 29. Save your money, the so called 'dripless" shaft seals are expensive, and have no advantages over a conventional stuffing box. We do not recommend them, for several reasons. I have been working with shaft seals since the 1960's. I have not seen one, but I suspect these dripless shaft seals for boats are the more or less the same as I have been around for so long. Packing generally just starts leaking more and more. There is a warning period there. I have seen numerous major shaft seal failures on equipment with little or no warning. Not a good thing. And it is much easier to remedy a leaking packing gland, even if improperly done, than it is to replace a leaking shaft seal. Shaft seals have their place. I would not care to be around one of my ammonia compressors fitted with packing. On a boat, I'll take my chances with packing.
