did you try the American Legion Yacht Club? They had moorings. Newport moorings? (Mike K/Geroge)

Mike and George, Yesterday was the Channel Ilsands to Newport race. Sad news was, we sat off the coast in front of Pepperdine U. for 3 hours. We finally threw in the towel and had to motor the remaining 45 miles to Newport Beach. We got in at 230 am. I spoke with the Newport Harbor master. They issue the moorings for the clubs. They have moorings available. (You might get a mooring for one night for free.) I think you can call the American Legion or Balboa Yacht club(next to Harbor Master) for shuttle service to from the mooring. I'm motoring down from LA the morning of the race. Newport is a zoo that morning. I was on a friend's boat going into the harbor entrance to check in when we were hit by a bunch of idiots on a big cruising boat. They took the stanchions and lifelines off one side of the boat and continued on as though nothing had happened. It was a group that dressed in tuxedos and had a small band on the boat at the start. They were obviously not racing but didn't mind screwing up others who were. The damage was substantial and it was a nice Swan 431. I was furious, especially since everyone else thought they were so cute with their antics. Mike Kennedy Conquest Cal 40 # 96 > > Randy > CAL 2-29 > Out Patient > Channel Ilsands Ca > > > >

People who have earned their money are usually more careful with it, and with their personal behavior as it affects other people. When I was much younger, the biggest boat in town was a striking Mercer 44, a lovely Bill Tripp (the elder) design with a dark blue hull. The owner treated the boat like a ten-year-old Chevy, with no maintenance and not much skill in maneuvering, judging by the scars on the topsides. I always wondered why somebody with such a nice boat didn't care for it. As we all know, Swans are not entry-level vessels. The combination of expensive boat plus reckless behavior suggests you were looking at a spoiled rich kid. It's somebody who is so superficially involved with the activity of sailing that he or she hasn't even acquired a familiarity with the most basic rules governing nautical behavior. It's like the powerboaters--here's my money, where's the key? Chris Campbell

I didn't make myself clear. We were on the nice Swan and got ploughed into by a bunch of idiots on a larger cruising boat, something about 46 feet and a motorsailor. They were in the Ensenada Race to party while we were racing. The Swan was pretty banged up and the other guys didn't even stop or offer any assistance. They chartered a big motorsailor every year for a while and were considered "cute' by the non-racers who saw the event as one big party. MIke Kennedy Conquest Cal 40 # 96

It's one of the reasons I don't really understand people who spend vast amounts of time watching other people do things on TV. Life is so much more interesting when you find an activity that interests you, and you engage in it. Others seem to prefer hanging around people who are engaging in an activity. Such folks miss out on the real fun. For example, I was sanding the bottom yesterday.... Chris Campbell still wiping bottom-paint dust out of his eyes

Hey, a little off the subject but since you guys are in the race, does it start on Friday or Sat? I was thinking of sailing down from Long Beach to Newport on Friday to watch the start but I cant figure out when it actually starts.
