I'm looking for all the required dimensions and specifications to have a rudder built from scratch. Any help would be great. I am the owner of Summer Wind CAL 30 hull 55. My parents purchased the boat in the fall of 1966 at the Long Beach Sail Boat Show. I believe she was built between the winter of 1965 and Summer of 1966. I would love to help you out, but I joined this thread late and need to know what you are trying to find out. I realize it has something to do with the rudder. Brent 949 294 1028

I placed some pictures of the rudder I believe you are looking for under the photo session in an album called CAL 30 Rudder. There are also two drawing from the sales brochure that kinda shows how it looks. The Rudder is a really simple design, but has its draw backs. The Rudder has two means of support. The first is the rudder tub that goes into the cockpit. The rudder shaft passes through the tube and terminates in the cock[it sole. The bummer is that is does not have any sort of bushing and can move around. Water will make its way through this tube on occasion. The other support is the the single gudgeon. It is actually two pieces that resemble a clamp. You will notice there is a little split where is grabs the post. These two piece actually are counter sunk and fared into the hull. The bronze bolt as counter sunk on one side, the bolt or actually large screw passes though the keel and into the other piece which is tapped. I actually have to have one of these side fabricated after the electrolysis caused it to snap. You can also see from the pictures the system makes it easy for water to get into the glass.

I inquired about a new rudder for my 1977 Cal 34 III from Foss Foam in California. They do not build the original, however make a modified rudder that follows the modified rudder they have for the Cal 40. A few changes but improved performance....price seems very reasonable at about $1,300. Got a quote of $3,000+/- from Foss Foam in Florida. They said they would have to make it from scratch. Good luck Greg 1977 Cal 34 III (Soon to be sold) ----- Original Message ----- From: jo… [at] wallyscustompcs.com To: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com Sent: Thursday, April 26, 2007 9:37 PM Subject: RE: [Cal_Boats] Re: Original CAL 30 I'm looking for all the required dimensions and specifications to have a rudder built from scratch. I ordered a rudder through Foss Foam in California, unfortunely it was the for the CAL 2-30 specs. They did not have the rudder specs for the original CAL 30...they said they could make it, but needs the specs in order to create it...hence why I'm here. Thanks for the help everyone, eventually I'm hoping to piece something together. I did some work on a boat (Islander) where the owner's depth sound was his rudder. After the 3rd time changing it out I gave him some navigation leassons all were well. FOSS Foam did a great job and priced right.
