Being in south florida we really don't need the immersion suit. The water in the summer is 85 degrees. EPIRB and life rafts are a must as well as jack lines and an inflatable SOS with harness per crew. At night if you go out of the cockpit you clip in.

Subject: [Cal_Boats] Off-Shore Safety Equipment Question.....
a question for the Group;
how many Green Water Sailors here go off-shore without an immersion suit for each person on board, a properly registered EPIRB, or in-cirt life raft?
please feel free to answer-up with both your equipment list and your opinion for or against carrying said equipment.

Up here in SF bay we had a horrible event last year. A guy taking his new-to-him boat from SF to Seattle, were right off Pt Reyes in 10-15 foot seas, lost his 18 year old son out of the companionway. He was coming up the ladder, ready to clip in, and a wave rolled the boat, he went over, and they could not recover him.
Our offshore rule now is, unless it's nearly flat calm, we clip on at all times when not below. I know the above is a freak occurance, but it's no trouble really to clip on while still below. We have 2 padeyes in the cockpit, one just below the companionway, the other at the aft end of the cockpit. We run a loose jackline between them, and this way when you come down the ladder you can bring your tether with you and leave it dangling into the cabin. When you go back up, you clip on first, before you go up the ladder.

Evian to go with each and every PFD on board........
