CAL 27 Pop-Top and CAL T/2

Husar, Charlie2007-04-23 13:33 UTC
Fiver, when we discussed comparisons, the original CAL 27 pop-top and the CAL T/2 ARE the same boat. They just glased in the pop-top on the T/2 to meet some headroom requirements for MORC/IOR. Both have that rare CAL bolt-on keel. your kidden me; i thought that 27 was a bit heavey for her looks. she just doesn't have that "fat-in-the-hips" look that both the 28 flush-deck and the cal 40 have from the stern (that i like so much). i don't like those pop-top's tho...... bad idea for north sea boats.... thanks for telling me the difference, Charlie. fiver ********************* --- In Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com, "Husar, Charlie" <husar_charlie@...> wrote: > > Fiver, when we discussed comparisons, the original CAL 27 pop-top and > the CAL T/2 ARE the same boat. CAL 2-27 Sails

Michael D2007-04-24 16:59 UTC
Hello Cal Sailors, We have finished replacing/upgrading our sails on Magic. We have a 125 genoa, a 155 kevlar genoa, and a main available.... The 125 genoa and main were used till the day we put the new ones on. The 155 kevlar genoa is showing its age, but I would still use it in light air. Anyone interested??? You won't be able to beat the price anywhere... free. Just pay for shipping. Feel free to contact me off-list. Here's the short story of the "White Squall" history, as I remember it. It was originally launched as Rocking Chair V. It was owned and conceived by Willis Boyd who owned the building that housed Jensen Marine. My impression is that he and his wife (Katie, I think), Millie and George Griffith, and Bill and Peggy Lapworth were all pretty good friends. Willis's two prior boats were both Lapworth "L's". He owned the first of 3 L-45's (Rocking Chair III) and the first of several L-40's (Rocking Chair IV). Both, of course, were wood boats as were all of the "L" class boats. Willis was quite accomplished. He even cast his own primary winches for the L-45 in the pre-Barient days. The L-45 later raced rather successfully as "Annie Too" up on the Bay in the late '60's and early '70's. My recollection is that he took delivery on the L-40 about a year before the Cal-40 was drawn. There were several active SoCal cruiser-racer classes of about this size in the early 60's. L-36, K-38, L-40, K-40, K-43's to name a few. All of these folks got caught rather flat-footed by the emergence of the Cal-40, and many of them sold their boats and bought Cal-40's, including the owner of my boat, Bob Allan. He sold L-36 #2, and "traded up" to Cal-40 #24. Back to Willis. He was a skilled sailor, who was also very active in the local "Dragon" fleet. And, a bit "quirky". I was part of the LAYC Lipton Cup crew in 1968, and Willis was our skipper (not the owner) on a Cal-36. It's hard to forget what he wore to the Saturday night dinner at San Diego Yacht Club ... a plaid suit (big plaid), mostly yellow-green-and-white, and "clogs". Quite a costume. So, with that in mind, it was no big surprise that Willis "went his own way" and had the deck-mold built for the only "Cal-40 Flat-top". I believe that it, as with the L-45, spent several years in San Francisco before being sold to the owners in Seattle. Most of this comes as a memory stretch. I sailed with Willis several times between 1962 and 1968. For me, that spanned my age from 16-22. Several of the details may not be completely accurate, and Roger Jones likely knows more about the genesis of the boat. I never went below on the "Flat-Top". I, too, would love to see some wide-angle photos. Newport To Ensenada This kills me as I am not participating this year. This is what you see and look like if you place 3rd in your class. 2005, pickup crew who sailed together two hours prior to race day on a Hunter 46. D1BC1 means Day One Becalmed. What an agravating evening. During the night we heard radio calls of boats dropping out and headed for Catalina (turned out to be over 100). We fought for every tenth all night. The next morning with 24 hours to go we saw chutes to the NW of us and knew we were not last. Ended up finishing in 36:30 something in a race for the line with two other boats. No one slept that night. PS, I'm the tall guy. Best wishes to all N2E participants. And former participants. --------------------------------- Ahhh...imagining that irresistible "new car" smell? When White Squall came to the Northwest it was purchased by Govner Teats, a physician in Tacoma. He had successfully raced Stormy Weather (I believe one of the many great Ben Seaborn designs) before buying the Cal 40. He owned it until he died (on the boat). I am going to try to attach a recent picture I took on the Gov Teats Memorial Race this winter. (Please note that we were ahead and to windward in the Cal 33 Runner and held that position to the finish line.) Last time I tried this the attachment was too big and it was sent back. Elwers, George A.2007-04-26 17:22 UTC
I've had two previous experiences with N-E. In 2002 I sailed aboard the Cal 40 Willow Wind with Wendy. The wind blew all night, and everyone's advice to me as a first timer was never to do another, because it would never be that good again. We finished second to Ahsante (another Cal 40) in cruising spinnaker. In 2003 we entered in our Cal 40, Hana, with a crew of Chris Young (owner of Cal 40 Restless), my wife, her best friend and her daughter (11), and my friend and his son (17). Other than Chris and me, none had sailed overnight before and all had learned to sail on Hana over the previous couple of years. We entered cruising non spinnaker. The wind blew all night, we finished in time to have a nap before lunch, and corrected third. This year we're going non spinnaker again and adding my older son (11) as skipper. He's got three around the buoys races as skipper, and our goddaughter, now 15 and a "veteran" from 2003, will captain the other watch. Looks like this year the race is going to get even with me, it's predicted to be light winds. My favorite moment from the 2002 race: we were approaching the finish line on a beam reach in a group of maybe 8 boats. Ahead and slightly to windward was a 45 footer of newer design. I don't remember her name, but her spinnaker had a horse prancing on it, and it was quite apparent it was a stallion, and he was happy. They were struggling to carry their 'chute, and took it down about a mile from the finish. As we sailed by with our spinnaker up, we heard the skipper on the other boat say to his crew "if that lumpy old Cal 40 can carry her spinnaker, we can carry ours!", whereupon they put theirs back up...with a huge twist in it. We sailed away, trying not to smirk. See you in Ensenada! My boat is in brackish water (annapolis) and I use Micron CSC. It's an ablative paint. I do four coats and it typically lasts 2 years. I did two coats of black as the base and two coats of red on top. When I see black paint, I know it's time to haul and paint. It even stands up to pre-race scrubbing. During the summer months when we get really heavy slime build-up, I hire a diver to scrub the hull before each major race or at least once every other week.
