Hey! I grew up in Kansas City, which (for you native coastal types
information) happens to be in Missouri. Missouri is the "Show Me" state.
Also shares some honors with Chicago in the Jazz Scene. Charlie Parker,
Count Basie, Lester Young and Harry Truman. I'm drunk. Never Mind about
Harry.
It's a great town to eat a steak in -- Washed down with a cold Schlitz and
chased with a Winston and some really piss-thin coffee.

Newport Ensenada / Santa Barbara

28 knots at the weather mark in Santa Barbara for Wet Wednesday. We rigged
my #3 onto the roller furler so we could roll up about a third of it.
Double reefed main and hold on tight. We tripped our keel out from under us
on a really big square wave. Water roared into the cockpit over the coaming
on the lee quarter as we slid down the face of it. Happened twice.
I've been knocked down before and I've rounded up and down in the same race,
but I've never done that one.
We blew a reef out of the main and let the blade all the way out for the
reaching and last upwind legs. The big waves surfed us into the 10's. Lots
of fun.
Through a miracle of Yacht Club handicapping, we won the race. I'm sort of
embarrassed about it. We corrected out over 3 forty plus footers who beat
us to the barn by 20 minutes. The majority of every fleet stayed in the
Harbor. Discretion is the better part of Valor. Stupid is as Stupid Does.
What a blast.
Where the heck was any part of that breeze last Saturday AM when we were
slogging around off the Coronados? Phooey.
