Re: [Cal_Boats] Sunbrella, Anyone?

Having just gone to the Oakland Sail Expo and looked at many new boats, I think that the imitation leather fabrics are unbeatable for interior cushions. The look and feel is incredible. I knew a women in Florida who did interior redesigns for private yachts and she raved about Utrasuede. I believe that is the fabric I saw on many of the boats in the show. I would certainly give it look.

Subject: [Cal_Boats] Sunbrella, Anyone?
Hi, Folks. I'm prepping to put durable covering on some interior boat
cushions. Going 5 inch nice foam. I have the foam and have cut to size
(electric turkey carver). I think sunbrella solid is what I'm after
(Sunflower yellow to match hull striupes). They state several weights
for the material, but don't give specs. Which is best weight -
furniture, marine, or awning? What is best material to put on bottoms
of cushions? Anything to watch out for in zippers? What are good
material sources?
I can do a redeck or bottom job, but this homey stuff is a little exotic
for me. Am I totally going up the wrong tree?
Any guidamce appreciated.
Cheers
Charlie

Hi Gina,
Could you tell me waht the material was, I am looking to do a lot of projects on my boats as well.
The sunbrella material I found around here is 20.00 a yard.

G'Day Charlie,
Having done a lot of cushions and upholstery I can offer a
bit of advice.
Brian Cleverly gave me a source once of a fabric similar
to sunbrella, but cheaper. I believe I have the contact
information at home and will get it to you. They were nice
enough to send swatches. That type of fabric is a good
choice for cushions.
Make the zipper openings longer than you think you need to
make stuffing the cushions easier. Most metal zippers are
more durable than most nylon ones, but nylon is probably
better in a humid application. If you use cording, use
plastic, not paper. Something with more grab than
sunbrella is probably best for the cushion bottoms. Many
people use a textured vinyl, but its lack of
breathability may be problematic. Look for a breathable
synthetic, and check closeouts, sometimes really ugly
stuff is available at bargain prices if you're using it
somewhere that won't show.
If you want specific advise on construction, let me know.
Best Wishes,
Gina
