Welcome, Sean! Obviously you'll want one of the Cals - but then we're maybe slightly biased in their favour! ;-p I got a little Cal20 and sail out of Los Angeles Harbor with glee. With good rigging, I'd think that the Cal 20 would be the best choice, because she's overbuilt and sails like a dream. In case you hadn't already seen it, here's an exceptionally helpful site about the Cal 20 on the bay: http://www.sealsspars.com/classy20footer.html That page, and the section on the Cal 20 in John Vigor's "Twenty Small Sailboats to Take You Anywhere" pretty much sold me on this boat. My first thought was a Santana 22 but all used ones I found were in pretty bad shape. I am currently looking at several CAL 20 and one cal 24 which seems to be in pretty good shape. Any opinion on preference between the two? Obviously I would have a bit more cabin space on the 24, but in terms of ease of singlehanded sailing on the SF Bay... I will appreciate any and all advice. I would get the biggest boat that you can afford. The bay is very windy, choppy and wet so the bigger the better for a drier ride and more stability. As far as single handing, most people rely on autopilots and roller furling so the size of the boat doesn't really matter up to about 40'. At that point, I feel that safe docking starts to become an issue for one person. For the bay, I like the newer Cal 39's and of course the classic C40 (although they may pound more upwind). A Cal 29 would work too and they can be great values. Another plus of the 29 is that you can get slips much easier. I have had two cal 20's in San Pedro, since the 70's. I use to race it out of CBYC Wet Wed. Back then there was a small fleet of about 15 non spin class. I have some custom made parts for cal 20 made of teak...a bridge and a winch pad...my brother was had a wood working mfg and pumped out some great wood parts. It's always great to see praise for the Cal 20. They're sturdy and good stiff sailors that can take a good breeze. But be aware of two weaknesses that Steve Seal has identified--the old spreader brackets break and the backstay fails. He has sturdier replacements for both. Helping my buddy step his mast on Wed., I grabbed the upper shroud to secure it and the spreader bracket failed (!!). We lowered the mast and I went home and got my old brackets to use until he can buy Steve's sturdy ones. A couple years ago I also had to replace my backstay, which started unravelling. What nice little boats.... Chris Campbell Cal 20 #1220 Mark Alan Stahnke (MAS Consulting) wrote: > > I have had two cal 20's in San Pedro, since the 70's. I use to race it > out of CBYC Wet Wed.
