Alcohol Stove to Propane Conversion
Michael D2007-06-08 19:39 UTC
Hello Listees,
Our little Cal has a Kenyon model 206 pressurized alcohol stove. My wifey (God love her morning coffee making heart) absolutely HATES it, although I did rebuild it and it works reasonably well.
I was looking into a drop in replacment, but I can't find anything quite like it. The Seaward Princess, model 2276, appears that it would fit. Unfortunately it s burners are not recessed nor does not come with a cover like we have with the Kenyon 206. As you may know, the counter space in a Cal 2-27 is at a premium. We like the fact that we can close the cover and have usable counter space.
I spoke with Taunton Stove Company in MA and was told that it would be "prohibitively expensive" for me to have them do the conversion. Bummer!!!
OK, here's my thought. I'm considering converting the Kenyon 206 to propane. Has anyone out there done this? If so, where did you find the parts (burners, controls, etc.)???
In the meantime, we bought a two burner Coleman camp stove to use. We'll see how that goes. Maybe I'll end up installing the Coleman burners and valves in the Kenyon 206 stove body and running it off disposable propane bottles (keeping them in the cockpit unless being used).
Any advice, opinions, etc. will be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Michael Duvall

Re: [Cal_Boats] Alcohol Stove to Propane Conversion
Terrence Spencer2007-06-09 15:32 UTC
I upgraded my existing propane system. The problem with propane is safety.
ABYC standards indicate that you should store your propane in a tank that
vents overboard. All connections should be inside this tank except the
connection at your appliance. Because propane is heavier than air, it can
fill a vessel when it leaks making it a virtual bomb. I put in a sniffer
and alarm for this reason with a solenoid that shuts it off if it leaks.
I think about going back to a simpler system. I have heard really good
things about the non-pressurized Origo alcohol stoves, for instance.
Anyway, just my own personal thoughts. Others on the list may have a
different perspective.
