What kind of paint do you all reccomend to pain the interior and
overhead of a Cal 25?
thanks, Marsh

The best quality exterior latex house paint you can afford.

I've used KILZ primer and Sears Kitchen and Bathroom enamel. The Sears paint is supposed to
prevent mildew. So far it looks good.

I think some 25s have adhesive holding carpet to the inner hull. That was not a problem
with the 40. I have seen some comment on removing the liner material and other 25
owners can comment on that. I had a Cal 25 about 35 years ago and it had indoor-
outdoor carpet on the inner hull.

I have used Pettit's Dura-White, an interior paint designed for boats.
Pettit touts it as adhering to any surface, even glossy, without sanding
(but with washing first). They also claim that it discourages mildew.
Now it just so happens that I am a skeptic about "adheres to any
surface," just as I disbelieve an offer of "free" anything, or
effortless accomplishment of any kind. So I prepped my surface a bit
more than necessary. I've been very happy with the Dura-White.
I also took my quart to the local Ace Hardware and had them tint it to
match a chip of the original interior paint. Let's just say that I had
a lot of chips of the original paint, or whatever that miserable
substance was that Cal slathered over the inside. Later I found that
the paint can had a big chunk of solids left at the bottom--the store's
paint shaker had not completely mixed it up. The next time I'm going to
stir it up first then take it in for tinting.

Marsh, after finishing the grinding and sanding, I did a dust washdown,
then an acetone wipe-down prior ro painting several coats (of the
exterior house paint mentioned in the other note).
Cheers

Yes, Mike, the later CAL 25s (and I'm sure other models) had the carpet
on the wall. SOB to remove because of the adhesive and the fact the
foam backing of the carpet stays with the glue on the walls. Mostly
scraping. Also, that fibered stuff they used to paint the roof for a
while is the dickens to get off, and edges will not sand smoothly.
Paint I use on interior (don't like glossy interior surfaces) is Sears
Weatherbeater or equivalent exterior house paint. It does have
anti-mold components. Seems durable.
Cheers

Don't do it? In the water, there are too many variables that could mess up your work IMHO. Depends I guess what you expect the outcome to be and risks your willing to take....it is all personal with the one we love.
I know a guy that painted his boat in the water at a dock...worked great "for him" and does look much better. I just would have chosen a more controlled environment on the hard.
Good Luck

The actual painting would be very hard. But the prep work would be downright nuts, not to mention very ecologically irresponsible. One reason to take a boat to the boatyard is because they're set up to handle the toxic runoff and airborne dust.
It's *posssible* to do the topsides in the water, but I think it would be like painting you car on the way to work...
