Cal 31 mast height

Does anyone know the height above the water of the Cal 31 mast? I want to
go under a bridge with 50' clearance.

r u sure u have a "standard" mast? best to measure. Run a tape up with the halyard--or do you have your main measurements?
For comparison, the Cal 39 SR is 50' for the I measurement. Add (I'm guessing) 4' for boom to cabintop, and maybe 5' for waterline to cabintop, so about 59 feet--call it 60.
Cal 31 is probably not that much shorter, but like I say, best to measure yourself.

Bob,
The standard Cal 39 mast height is 54' 3" feet above the waterline.
(The "I" measurement is the jib leach length. The main luff length,
"P", is 44'.)
With the VHF antenna I wouldn't attempt a bridge under 60'.
Even so, the at 75 foot railroad bridge at Benecia looked close
enough to go searching for the chart to make sure before passing under.

Yep, I'm a big chicken when it comes to bridges. When I had my cal 27 in San Rafael, I used to make a practice of going farther and farther west under the richmond bridge, seeing how low a span I could go under before I totally freaked out. I think I got down to the 4th or so span from the causeway.
It's so hard to compare heights when you're looking forward into the distance. What seems to be risky usually turns out to be well over your mast height. Soes someone know some cool trignometrickery to determine if a span of uncharted height is safe for your stick or not?

If you have a masthead tri-color or anchor light you can get a clue, unless the ambient light is too bright. If your light is shining on the underside of the bridge as you approach, the light is lower than the bridge. If it's not, don't try it. Of course, you also have to worry about your windex, VHF antenna, and anything else that sticks up above the light, and don't forget that if you're sailing the boat will likely heel much less as you pass through the wind shadow of the bridge, causing your height to increase at the least opportune time. Best to make careful measurements, check the charts, and correct for the state of the tide.

If you want to look at my Owner's Manual, I scanned it and put it all
on my website at http://www.melantho.com and click on Cal 31.

See:
http://mauriprosailing.com/techinfo/boatspecs/boatspecs.htm
I = dimension from deck to top of mast is 41.5 feet. My Cal-33 is 46
feet and my drawings show a design bridge clearance of 50'.

Thanks to all who responded. The 45'5" looks good, but I will measure
anyway.
