Winds of Cal-tember???
Fred Haas2007-06-25 00:28 UTC
Hey Puget Sound Cal people,
I've had occasion to spend a couple of weekends as a hanger-on with the
Cal 40 group up here, and have had a great time. I've met some great
people, seen some very cool boats, and learned a couple of new tricks.
So I'm bringing this question to list.
Who would show up if I arranged an All- Cal gathering this fall?
Here's what I propose.
Arabella's Landing in Gig Harbor has guest moorage for up to 25 boats.
It is located right in the middle of the harbor, and easy walk from
downtown, which is somewhat of a misnomer. Gig Harbor is picturesque,
extremely well protected, and fairly central in the Sound. There's
plenty to see and do for your crew and yourselves, When I last checked
with them, the weekends of the 8th and 29th of September were still
available. Arabella"s has two shoreside facilities available for rent,
which would accomodate groups of our size.
I think for about $15 per boat we could rent an appropriate facility,
provide coffee and some pop, and cover the general expenses of
organizing a weekend. Any left over money can provide MGD, or working
capital for a future event, altho my preference would be for MGD. For a
first time event, I think it's best to keep it simple by providing the
basics, and letting the group potluck it's way through the details. My
own experience with events like this is that people outdo themselves at
making things work out, and attempts to introduce too much structure
are generally a waste of energy.
If you are interested in this type of an event, please let me know in
the next week or so. If there is, and I suspect there will be,
sufficient interest, I will set up an event. My preference would be the
weekend of the 8th, since the weather tends to be more stable, and the
days a little longer than at month-end. Reservations for moorage will
be up to the individual boat's skipper.
If you'd like to do this event, please provide the following;
Boat Name and length
Contact info, email and/or phone
Number of people on your boat
Any thoughts on making the event a success.
How likely you are to actually show up on either weekend
See you in September

Hi Fred
Kismet Cal 40, in Port Orchard, would like to attend all get togethers after
August 15th. Kismet will be ready for use by then. I fully support a
Puget Sound Cal Club. In the Bay Area they have Caltopia for all Cal
Boats - see http://www.stage3learning.com/caltopia/. Maybe you can get some
good ideas.
Good luck
Keith

We're eager to get more time on the water and meet new people. Both
of those weekends are open for us (but not the 15th, I'm hosting a
charity BarBQ at Lake Sammamish) We'd definitely plan on attending.
That's a couple weeks after our Desolation Sound trip so Sleipnir
should have any nagging problems all fixed up by then.

Fred,
I am there either weekend. Either Saturday I will have a soccer game (to
coach at), but I can be there the rest of the weekend. Arabella¹s and Gig
Harbor makes a great location. There is something for everyone in town;
good food, groceries, Tides Tavern, etc.
Thanks for getting this off the ground and let me know if I can help in any
way.
(Also....nice job on Summer Vashon race.)

Fred,
I am interested. The only problem I may run into is my sons fall baseball
schedule. However if it all possible I would like to bring "Rebecca Shea"
down for this event.

Could we at least mount a pole and a tarp in the middle of the deck?
Wouldn't want the poor thing to feel left out or anything. <grin>
I'm interested in the gathering but can't commit to it; September is
already filling up. I'll try to hold the later weekend open, though.

i really am lothed to admit this.....
but my Sister's boat is a "Bag-Liner"......
and you know how those thinks are built. if i tie much more than a
flag to it; it's more then likely to ripe the deck off the thing. but
if you ever meet my Sister, don't tell Her i said that...... :)(:
