First set of questions -- Wheel steering and hull number
Richard2007-06-24 03:07
So I was up at the boat today finishing up the electrical project.
All looks good there (aside from some strangeness on the DC panel that
I'll have to trace out later)...
Anyway, questions..
1.) Does anyone know what the make model of the pedestal/wheel on my
'75 2-29 is? I think it's an Edson, possibly a 300 series. I took
the compass and top dome off today but I can't find ANY markings to
indicate a model or make. I measured the top plate at 7" but now that
I see the 300 series is 6 7/8" I'm thinking I may not have been
precise enough in measuring to be sure. I would like to install a
pedestal guard but I just don't know what pedestal I have to begin the
process of finding an appropriate guard.
2.) Where should I look to find the hull # of the boat? I have an old
bill of sale that was on the boat with a hull#, but I also have the
Jensen Marine owners manual which has a different hull#. So I am not
sure what the actual number is.
Thanks in advance..

I'm not sure exactly what the pedestal is, but if you've got dimensions, try
Popeye's (north end of Everett Marina, by the Yacht Club building) and
perhaps Dunato's Second Wave in Ballard. Both do consignment stuff and have
older gear that would be more likely to match perfectly. Second Wave has a
much larger selection, but Popeye's is a great resource (not just for used
stuff).

My Cal 25 and my old Cal 20 both had the hull number laminated behind a layer
of clear fiberglass inside the hull on the starboard transom. Both were
visible by looking straight aft from the starboard lazarette hatch.
Where in Everett are you located? My 25 (Firecracker) is in F-51 South in the
main PoE marina. There are a few other Cals around there as well.

Richard,
My 1975 Cal 2-29 has a pedestal manufactured by "Yacht Services." They have
been out of business for many years. Edson doesn't have any parts that are
specified, but some may actually fit. It's amazing what you can find if you
look in the right places, such as sheaves, chain, sprockets, etc.
You will find that the newer Edson pedestal guards are spaced a lot closer
together than the Yacht Services ones were. This makes finding a used
mounting plate a fruitless idea. You will probably have to manufacture an
adapter plate on your own and buy an Edson guard. I haven't talked to Edson
about rather or not their mounting plate would be close enough to adapt to
the old YS pedestal.
I have made a compass mounting plate out of wood as a temporary fix for a
corroded up plate that my Ritchie compass sat on. I painted it to look
pretty nice, but it will rot away in no time, so I will probably cut one
from Aluminum and have it powder coated when I get a little more time. I had
Ritchie re-manufacture the compass. They charge a flat rate and upgrade
every part to the newest specs. The only part that they re-used on mine was
the stainless shell..... LOL. I basically got a new $500 compass for $240.
If you look at the transom from the rear of the boat you will find the ID #
about 3/4 of the way up nearer the right (starboard) side. It's a small
indentation about 2 X 3" or so with the number recessed into the fiberglass.
It should read CAB297XXXX75. Mine is CAB297630675, which translates to
Cal-boats 29 Hull # 763 built June 1975.
Hope this all helps.

Ooh, thanks for the tips on Popeyes and Second Wave, I'll have to
mosey over there next time I'm up there.
We are at South D61. I think we need to make a Cal registry for
Everett Marina or all of the surrounding area. Unless there is
already one. Might help with organizing local events.

Cool, I'll check it out.
By the way, before I was ever on this board, and actually before we
bought our Cal, I spent quite a bit of time on your website, I was
real interested in the Rigid Boom vang on your boat.
