SF Bay Cal Raftup 2007
Just got back from Paradise Cove in Tiburon. We had 3 cals all together:
- Cal 39 "Sea Star" (us)
- Cal 35 "Runnin Late" Dave Biggs
- Cal 39 "Osprey" Steve & Kathy Terry
We got there about 11:30 and dropped our anchor in about 10 feet. The wind was whistling down the hill at 15-20 knots and cold. About 12:30 or so, Dave dropped his anchor about 100 yards aft of us and came up on his dinghy and visited for awhile. He left at about 1300, and we sat around eating & drinking and watching the wind meter climb up to 20-25 with gusts to 28. Then Steve & Kathy showed up at 1400. They tied up along side for about 45 minutes. It was fun having 2 cal 39's to compare notes on. Man, they have fixed up their interior nicely! I took a lot of mental notes.
We cast them off at about a quarter to 3 (the wind blew them away fast!), hoisted the hook and had a very mellow sail back to Richmond. The wind mid-bay was half the strength from the anchorage. Normally, paradise cove is, well, almost paradise! Good holding and good protection from winds anywhere from SW to NW. But not today: the wind seemed to drop right down over the hill and hammer us--and it was cold!
Well, next year we'll try another cal raftup, maybe next time in clipper cove or some such.
Fair Winds;
