Faryman tranny bites dust - outboard time?
wind76dancer2007-07-30 02:14
The long dreaded moment arrived at the end of our two week vacation.
In the middle of Peavine Passage in the San Juan Islands the
transmission on our 30 year old Faryman diesel died. Lots of
excitement all around!
The question is: which outboard engine to purchase to replace the
diesel (the cost of installing a new inboard or rebuilding the inboard
is too high - also I need to do something SOON to get the boat home
from Anacortes where it was towed). Does anyone have any experience
with installing an outboard on the transom of any of the Cal 27
models? What did you go with and how happy are you with it? Any
information would be much appreciated!

Pop top 27 and T/2 are set up with outboard many times. The transom is
partially cut out to accomodate access. There are several in our area. I
believe they were originally sold with either inboard or outboard, your
choice. I don't know of any 2-27 or 3-27 set up for outboard.

I'm pulling my Farymann this coming weekend and will be parting it
out. If you're interested in the tranny (or anything else) let me know.

John,
When I purchased Magic (1979, 2-27, Hull #627), the Universal 5411 was dead. The previous owner installed a 9.9 4-stroke Mercury on the transom. I chose to replace the 5411 with a Beta Marine BZ482 diesel.... about $6K in 2004. I installed the new diesel myself with Magic in the water and very pleased with my choice.

The 2-27 was offered with an outboard from the factory, A-4 and Diesel were
optional. There is an outboard model in Buffalo. The outboard obviously
works but I would want an electric start because it's a long way down to the
rope start. I think the boat in Buffalo has a tilt up bracket. There must
be some additional reinforcement in the transom where it bolts through. If
Honda makes an electric start in the 10 HP range it would be a place to
start. I used to have a 15 HP Evinrude on a CAL25 that was overkill and a
7.5 hp Honda kept up nicely with MUCH better reverse.
BTW if my inboard ever fails I'm getting a new inboard!
Good Luck

If you go the outboard route I think 6 hp is adequate, my 4 hp Suzuki on my Cal 24 works fine as long as the sea is reasonably calm. I have one of those scissor style brackets, really worn out tho.
You might be able to cut out your transom for it, I've seen it done to a Cal 28, and there is even a Cal 29 version with an outboard. Expect to suffer with prop coming out in rough seas, but then, it's time to sail! If you have to motor a lot in rough water inboard is way to go. I know 9 horse outboards come with electric start, I don't know about smaller units. Personally I hate having excess weight on the transom, it makes the boat hobby horse, big difference when I race with the motor down below, the boat stays level and the sails stay in trim moe bettah. There is a T-2 (27 Cal IOR) parked next to mine with a five horse Nissan. Or, you could always learn to scull like a certain famous sailing couple...with unlimited time to get from port to port.
Those Farrymans are one cylinder engines? They make a pleasant chugging sound? You can pretend your a famous Greek fisherman, eh ?

Thanks to everyone for all the information! It is especially
interesting to learn that the boat was offered with an outboard from
the factory. We are leaning strongly towards putting a Honda 9.9
electric start on the transom with an extra beefy bracket and
reinforcing the transom. Then we can get the boat home and deal with
replacing/repairing the inboard in the future on our own schedule....
we were REALLY happy with how well the 2 hp 4 stroke Honda on our
dinghy pushed Windancer out of the 2 knot+ current that was trying to
pile us on the rocks when the transmission failed!
