Pentaquod lost her rig when a barrel turnbuckle failed due to undetected crevice corrosion around 270 degrees of the cylinder. Boat U.S. totaled the boat without any argument and paid off promptly, and sold it back to us for a pittance. We got it put back together, and my fast-talking brother-in-law managed to sweet talk them into insuring us again. (It took a new survey to convince them.) A new mast for a Cal 29 runs about $10,000 with the standing rigging, so that will eat up the coverage on most boats of similar vintage. Old sailboat values seem to be a case of the sum of the parts is greater than the whole. Alfred Poor 1969 Cal 29 #132, "Pentaquod"
