Pulling a Farymann from a 2-29
John Caldwell2007-08-09 07:08
I know that some of you with a 29 have replaced your Farymann with a
Beta Marine.
I've started pulling my old Farymann apart in preparation for such a
repower.
Any tips or tricks from any of you who have made the swap would be
much appreciated.
Even if you didn't repower with the Beta Marine, if you've pulled a
Farymann from a 29, I'd love to hear what you encountered in doing so.
The Farymann sits rather tall in the engine compartment and is bound
to hit the cockpit floor as it moves forward for removal. I'm
anxious to hear how you handled that. Did you cut the cockpit
floor? Did you drop it off of the mounts before pulling it forward?
Did you go nuts with a gas axe?
Thanks in advance for any input!

set your type 3 phaser on level 5, and direct the weapon at the base
of the engine block for no longer than 1.34 seconds. after that a
simple ventilating of the cabin, and subsequent scraping of any
localized glass-charring should solve your problem.......
unless of course, you had intended to sell the old engine on "Crages-
list" after removal......?????

I don¹t know if these are ³tips², but these procedures were helpful for me
(assuming Fiver¹s phaser weapon does not work for you)
1. I cut a piece of cardboard to fit the salon floor and reach up the sides
a bit and laid it down.
2. I cut a piece of 1/4 inch plywood to fit the salon floor and laid it on
top of the cardboard.
3. All of this was to protect the floor when you set the new engine down on
it.
4. I used a couple of 2 x 12¹s bolted together, one wide enough to set over
my companionway hatch and the other just lightly smaller, to fit just inside
the hatch frame. With a big eye bolt in the center to accept a ³come along²
or ³engine lift² (not sure what they call these but it was a chain with a
two way ratchet) which I borrowed for the procedure.
5. After cleaning out the battery area in front of the engine, I laid two
2x4s down to slide the Farymann out along.
6. Label every hose and wire as it came off the engine and battery.
7. Save every part or set of parts in a plastic baggy labeled with a
permanent marker.
8. The engine slides up the two by¹s with the aid of the engine lift and
human muscle power and has to be wrestled a bit to the cockpit floor.
9. When I took the Farymann completely out of the boat, I was towed to a
nearby hoist and, using the same procedure, lifted it clear of the boat.
In retrospect, the phaser idea sounds really great. I am sure others on the
list will have done this procedure and have even better tips.
Good luck with your project.

Thanks, folks, for making me grateful for my outboard motor. Removal
instructions: disconnect gas line; loosen clamps; lift.

John,
Pulling the Farymann out of my 2-29 was probably one of the easiest projects
I have done. It took two of us less than an hour to disconnect everything
and hoist the engine out of the boat. I had no clearance issues, we just
slid the engine forward and used the main halyard to hoist the engine out.
If I remember correctly, we did place a couple of boards on edge to extend
the rails a little further to slide the engine as far forward as possible.

John,
I pulled and rebuilt mine last year. I hooked a come-along to the
boom to pull the engine straight out the companionway. You will need
to guide the engine forward as you lift it out of the engine
compartment. To make the attachment to the boom I wrapped carpet
around it to protect it then wrapped a chain around it several times
to distribute the load. I attached the come-along to this chain. To
support the boom I attached two halyards close to where the come-
along was attached to avoid bending the boom. Again, I padded the
boom and wrapped each halyard around acouple of times.
Obviously you need to disconnect all wiring, the prop shaft, and the
fuel line. I unscrewed the motor mounts from the support rather than
from the engine. This allowed me to slide it forward along the
supports.
I recommend taking digital pictures of everything from every angle
before disconnecting anything. Be sure to plug up the opening to the
bilge before you start in case you drop any parts.
You might consider rebuilding it. The parts should still be
available unless yours is too far gone.
Good luck,
Graham

Hi
John
Good to replace it thay are old salt water cooled on banger mine still runs good but there was water blockage in the water jacket now cleared.
Since your tranny blew, the parts for the hurth are around but Nanni gearbox
well they hard to find.
They were good engines for there time but all engines wear out.
Pulling the motor no problem.
1. 4x4 across the cabin top and add the boom and halyard for a little back up
you can bend the or break it even if its Halyard supported.
2 Remove the Alternator for more room in there.
3 some assorted 2x4 and 4x4 and a small plywood piece to help shore and slide it
4. The back of motor will sag so you need to help it out.
My 5cents worth
