SF PHRF Rating
Susan Ingram2007-08-17 05:19
Hi everyone. I have a 1971 Cal 27 PopTop. I am wondering what her PHRF
rating is. I checked the YRA site, they say 198, but that seems a
little low to me. I would think they would be in the low 200s. There
are no PHRF certificates that I could find in the area.
Any thoughts?
Thanks
Suzee

Hi suzee;
I had a 73 cal 27 PT; I had a NorCal PHRF certificate last year for 186.
That's for an outboard and with a kite, the inboard makes it 192 according
to the YRA at http://www.yra.org/PHRF/ncphrf_base_rates.html.

Basically you have your boat measured... by YOU.
Find the form, and then fill it out, inserting your sail sizes,
dimensions.
and send a few bucks to them for your rating.
YRA- PHRF should have the form available. see this link:

Here is a link for some information and tools available on the net
http://www.ussailing.org/phrf/
this is a good list for high -low- average of most boats
http://www.ussailing.org/phrf/documents/ClassPerformanceHandicaps.pdf
and the rig dimensions
http://www.ussailing.org/phrf/documents/CriticaRigDimensionsforHandicapping.

Hi Susie:
I have a CAL 27 I race in San Diego. Try my website. As the
moderator, I'll get a request and then approve it and you will have
access to more info about the boat, it's configuration, specs,
tuning, ratings and photos than you need.
Quickly though...ratings in SF are lower than SD. 34.5 or 35
foot "I" measurement (mast height) is the standard. There is no tall
rig anyway. I rate 186. No inboard. 155% genoa. My whisker pole is
1.4 x "J". The "J" is 12 feet, so the pole can be extended to 15' 8".
192 rating for inboard in SF. If you race against boats that use
their spinakers, and they don't have a class specific for non-spin,
then you gat a NSO. That's a non-spin offset. Mine is 22 sec.which
you add to 186 for that race only.
All sails sheet outside of the shrouds, except maybe a 100% jib. I
have three sets of tracks for three different sails.
If the wind is light you need the 155% and you will win. This boat
is all about the headsail. The main does not drive the boat.
You can beat the 135 rated boats if....your bottom, keel and rudder
are faired, smooth and freshly painted (smooth), your sails are new
and shape well, your crew, starts, race course strategy and tactics
have fewer errors than your nearest competitor and you know and use
the RRS. That's what it takes to win.
In SF with the high winds, the 155 will probably be too large for
most days. Need several sized headsails, a crew that change them
while racing ie a dual groove luff foil (all sails must have a luff
tape, no hanks). I use a tuff luff foil with a 155, 149, 130 and
120% headsails.
I also have two spinakers with all the deck hardware and a spin pole.
Yes...it takes money to win! (unfortunately) Good luck.
ps: I buy on ebay

Thanks! Ironically, there was another guy that races in my division
last night that had the exact same info. He was explaining how the
SF YRA rated his boat and the differences between the H/L/A ratings
and his actual. There is a WEALTH of info on that site. Mucho Grasso!
