propeller

Sailors:
I've been looking for a more suitable propeller for my 8 hp Merc mariner
outboard, one that will give a bit more engine speed for a given
throttle opening when pushing the sailboat. The idea is to reduce plug
fouling. I e-mailed Michigan Wheel and they no longer carry the
larger-diameter, lower-pitch propellers that Merc lists for this
outboard. They suggested that i check with dealers to see if any had
them on the shelf still. I did some e-mailing without success.
Can anybody recommend good propeller dealers who might have some
small-motor props in stock?

hello, Chris....
if i were looking for an odd-ball screw; i would take the number
and go to the "Boat Part's" section of e-bay. once there, find the sub-
catigory for propeller's and or engine parts. then start looking......
it may take some days, weeks or even months.... but i never let
that stop me.

I'll give that a try...I've got more time than money.

Chris, Mercury offers 9x7" prop for your Mariner 8, assuming the s/n is over a197112. It is p/n 48-828152a12, and retails for about $93. Any Merc dealer should be able to order it for you.

Hi, Fred:
Michigan Wheel also carries that one still too. The Merc. manual for
this motor lists two others for heavier boats--both 9-3/4" diameter, one
with 6-1/2" pitch and one with 5-1/2". Mich. Wheel no longer offers those.
I've been trying to figure out which would be the best compromise
between operating efficiency for the motor (getting the RPMs high enough
to operate without fouling plugs) and reasonable gasoline consumption.
Power really isn't the issue. The Merc. book gives some weight ranges
for the props but judging by their rules the standard prop (which i
have) shouldn't move the boat at all. Any idea which prop. would be
best for a boat with a specified (hypothetical, I know) displacement of
4,750 lbs.?
