Storm Jib
caribgt2007-08-24 15:30
I own a Cal 25-2 which I sail on Lake Erie. I have two questions. I
would like to buy a storm-jib, but I am receiving different
information on size. Could someone suggest what size storm-jib would
be right for a Cal 25-2?
My second question has to do with the correct rigging for reefing the
main sail. My main-sail has a single reefing point, and the boat yard
has rigged the reefing system but I fairly sure they have not done it
the right way. Does someone have a diagram or suggestions for the
correct rigging on the boom. Thanks. GT.

GT,
Until recently, I owned a 25-2. I still have a barely used, Doyle 100 sail for the boat. It was only on the boat for six months. If you are interested, contact me off line.

I'd say one pertinent question is - what wind range do you want a sail for?
Storm jib is a little vague, unless you mean the Beaufort Scale 'storm' :-).
On my Cal 2-27 I found that 100% was good to maybe 20 knots going
to windward and usable for a few knows more. Above that I dropped
down to 65%.
On the Aloha 32 100% is good till about 25. Just had that boat out in
30 gusting to near 40, it went beutifully on a broad reach with 2 reefs
in the main and a 60 percent high-clewed storm jib.

go to GOOGLE and type in In Line Reefing and see if that helps. Randy CAL 2 29

Reefing (was Storm Jib)
Husar, Charlie2007-08-25 12:20 UTC
Randy, a couple questions. Do you have the fittings to bring 2 lines
back to the cockpit? Does your main halyard come back to the cockpit?
The thing about reefing is that when you need it most, it is the hardest
to do. I use a two line technique that has the halyard also available
from the cockpit.
Cheers

Charlie, I have the orinal boom. My reef lines are external. I heave to and make all my adjustments. I was seaching the web for a new end piece and saw the set up for single line reefing. Randy CAL 2 29

Where on Lake Erie are you? I sail out of Buffalo.
A friend of mine had a Cal 25-2 and it had the same reefing system as my
2-27 which had internal lines on the boom and a hook at the gooseneck. I
didn't think that there were different rigs on the 25-2.

I love compressed wisdom. Here we have The Truth, distilled. My other
boat has roller reefing, an antiquated and wretched system that some
people actually defend. They are not the people who have tried to do it
when they need it the most.
On the Cal 20, you can reef while standing in the companionway, if you
have a clew line that comes forward on the mast. I discovered it the
first time I single-handed the boat, which was with the wind right on
the bow in passing thunderstorms. I needed it the most and it was
(luckily) fairly easy to do.
