I would like to prep this project from many states away from my boat. Can anyone tell me for certain what size rope will fit at the mast head sheave on my Cal 2 29? I don't want to buy the incorrect size. Thanks in advance!! aaron

Aaron, how you doing? 3/8" fits the shrouds nicely, is plenty strong, and is easy to handle. You did not mention rope to wire. I believe it is unnecessary. Go with all line. If you are a cruiser, super low stretch is not needed. I would second Charlie's recommendation. I switched to rope to wire and I'm sorry I did. --- In Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com, "Husar, Charlie" <husar_charlie@...> wrote: > > Aaron, how you doing? 3/8" fits the shrouds nicely, is plenty strong, > and is easy to handle. I¹ve been switched over to rope halyards for about 10 years and am very happy with 3/8¹ STASET double braided line. I recently switched to Staset X for it¹s noticeably lower stretch. It works even better in higher winds (we¹ve had a great racing season this year,) but is stiffer and more difficult to handle. The problem with rope halyards is that they stretch out when the wind pipes up, which is when you most need it not to stretch. Touching up the Halyards as winds increase is an option, but it¹s hard on your masthead sheaves and other turning gear. Slacking off the main sheet and vang helps reduce loads to re-tension halyards. A Cunningham can help in a pinch as well, but a low stretch halyard is definitely an advantage racing or cruising in higher wind areas. Most of the time for most sailors, it¹s probably not an issue. Instead of "shrouds", I meant "sheaves".
