Yep, in most cases when things have gone in the crapper we have jury rigged
something or made repairs and gotten home OK...two times when we were stuck
and nothing we could do was going to get us off we were damn glad to be able to
call for assistance. Two tows over a period of 22 years, I can live
with...loosing my boat, or my life or someone else's, or getting sued because I
caused some kind of damage to someone's property or the environment trying to re
float or save the boat when it just was beyond my capabilities, not so much. I
certainly agree that there are many times when folks call for a tow when it
seems to me clearly they should have been able to help themselves (hear it on
the VHF all the time), but even then, I'm not on scene and don't know the
full story.
Obviously, the situation is different for each person and vessel, depending
on a lot of factors. Experience, type of boat, equipment, physical condition
of the people on board, weather, etc. The list goes on and on. I look at it
like this, for the cost of 1 tank of diesel, I have the ability to decide to
call for professional help before things progress from a bad situation to a
disastrous one, without possibly waiting too long because I was worrying about
how to pay for it. I hope I never need it again, but it's at least a bit of
peace of mind knowing it is in place if I get into a situation where I really
do.
If I were in a different place, and a different point in my life, with
different responsibilities, maybe I would feel differently about it...but, here I
am ;-)
Fiver, are you saying no towing insurance, or no insurance of any kind,
including liability?
Best to all!

i had no idea this would spark a bunch wore comment......
as to the question of my not wanting *insurance*.
well, no towing and nothing on the replacement or repair of BB-54
certainly. but as to the damage that she (or i) could do to another
boat....... that sort of liability is needed in an area like Puget
Sound. what with all the landlubb-ing, inexperienced, often-times
impaired (from numerous souses), ignorant of maritime law....
<takes deep breath....>
people. a few of said people owning some very expensive "Micro-Soft"
Yacht's; while still other said people owning 40 foot high-speed go-
fast boats full of uneducated young girls playing what i can only
assume is music, as i can only hear a thumping sound as they roar by
in these ostentatious machines of dubious legal financing.
<takes another deep breath.....>
mind-you, not that this poor girl, who lives on a fixed income; could
ever have enough insurance to cover even a scratch on one of those
big Micro-Soft Yacht's. not-to-mention that i am pretty certain that
the guys with the go-fast boats will not be looking to settle up with
me through my insurance carrier, if you catch my drift........ :)(:
now if i were living in a more friendly or down-home area, i
wouldn't bother with any insurance at all. and even here in Seattle,
i won't have any on my 16' foot long-boat. i think that would be like
insuring my bicycle.
don't get me wrong though,
i think all the Sailors are Great up here.....!
