Struts
Randy Alcorn2007-09-07 03:48 UTC
I am getting a vibration in forward gear. I have a folding prop and usally I get kelp or plastic bags wrapped around my prop. I dove the boat and my strut is loose. I can't find any cracks just movement.
How do I tighten it up?

Slip into your port or starboard lazarette (right or left handed?) and
folding your legs just right you can slide down under the cockpit sole far
enough to reach the nuts on the inside of the boat. A 3/8 drive ratchet
should move side to side enough to work. The forward nuts will actually be
in front of the bulkhead in the lazy, but there's a large enough "limber"
for you to still reach them. You will need an assistant to hold a giant
screwdriver on the outside of the boat, if it has the same style bronze
machine screws that Mariposa had.
This might be better done in the yard, where you can drop the strut, and
re-bed it before you tighten it. Gives you a chance to inspect and probably
replace the cutless bearing as well, but you definitely need to get that
tightened or all hell could break (bad word) loose under power.

I am to late. I was able to squeeze down there and tighten everything. The vibration was still there. I jumped in the water and looked. The strut is in two pieces. Are these speacially made? Anybody have any idea where to start? Randy

the problem with welding the broken strut is that they tend to break from
stress cracks, possibly as a result of becoming brittle over time. You'll
probably note when looking at the break that there is a small area of shiny
newly broken metal and a significant amount of dull metal from ever
deepening cracks. The stress cracks wil be in other places besides where it
broke...this time.

The outfit is Marine Hardware in Redmond, Wa. I do some business with
them in my day job. Google them, they will be of great help.

I don't know if this helps you or not, but in May I had a new strut
made for my Cal 29. I had it done at Marine Hardware here in Redmond,
WA. http://www.marinehardware.com
I sent them my old strut that was pretty darn pink and had a lot of
cracks. They made me a new one. I think it was around $500.00.
Here's a link to a picture of my old and new strut side by side
before putting it on in the boat yard.
