Hey, Charlie, encouraging people to have fun inexpensively is not
"showing off." Haven't we all known people who get into a new activity
and must buy the most expensive and best of whatever that activity
offers? I recall a guy who was serially into racing catamarans,
photography, and woodworking, and then I lost track. Each time he went
out and bought all the best stuff, at no small cost.
Low-budget racing puts more premium on the skipper's skill than on
his/her wallet. There's much to be said for that. One-design racing
removes the need to indulge in handicapping system. Put them together
and you've got a formula for cheap fun and skill improvement.
I keep thinking about my wealthy acquaintance who _some day_ will have a
dream sailboat and _some day_ will take time to have fun. Me, I'm just
pedaling my bike down to the mooring and sailing my Cal 20 _any day_ I
choose.
And I just realized that this year is my boat's 40th birthday. Sounds
like an excuse to go sailing.

Steve,
I don't understand it really, smaller boats are more fun, more like toys, more like sports cars than family sedans or buses. My first experience sailing in yachts was a feeling of "Have we left the dock yet"..and "we're to far up from the waves, is that the side of the boat or the sea wall"...and "when will the boat start to rock?-will I ever get to see some sea spray?". Then next thing I noticed is that people usually stay in the cockpit all the time, just going below when they need to use the head, whereupon you get get instant sea-sickness. Sail handling is more difficult and more dangerous. If you get your hand foot caught in a coil of genoa sheet line when you tack and start winching it in it becomes an injury or life threatening vs. an annoyance. And you're more likely to nix the sail outing because people beg-off at the last moment, and you don't want to go out with enough crew.
Speaking of racing, Eric and I took second place in the Marina del Rey to Seal Beach "Outlaw Regatta". We thought we'd gotten first until the awards were given out, but I got a skull key chain which will take up less space and require less dusting than the Catalina 27's full sleleton figurine. Mainly, I beat my arch rival's Coumbia Challanger 24 both boat for boat and corrected time, his crew floundered when we got hit by 30 knot gusts shy of Pt. Fermin while we hung in there....and started surfing down wind...whoooey!. The race is the biggest blast on the west coast, all sorts of wind conditions and a feast and party and the finish. We then sailed to Catalina Sunday in light conditions, motoring much of the way. Wow, you can go forever at half throttle on very little gas! The Isthmus was a zoo, we lucked out finding an anchorage blow the cliffs a half mile up the coast. Nice snorkeling with the fishes on Labor day and brisk sail back on Tuesday with 15 knots on a close
reach, then the wind failed a mile from the MdR breakwater. In the channel we got chased down by a big inflatable filled with US Coastguard, boarded and given a safety check. They found a few deficiencies: flares out of date, original registration not on board (I keep a copy on board) and no name affixed to boat. Other than that it was fun to have them aboard, very polite and courteous and they boarded while we kept a constant 4 knots of way, then dis boarded same way.

more fun.

yes, at least a placard inside the boat, and yes, fire extinguisher must be mounted, not loose in settee cabinet. The musta figgered I had so many flares that at least a few of them wouldah woiked. I even had three that looked like WWII "Jap" hand grenades!
They said something about me boat being a "documented" boat therefore requiring a name. Not sure what that meant, documented, like a US vessel?

I'd have asked them exactly what they meant by that. There are many,
many boats w/ no name on them. Hell, MY boat has no name on it and from
what I've been told, it NEVER has. It WILL, but it doesn't now.

Documented means it was registered with the Coast Guard and not the State of
California, if I remember correctly. Costs more, but foreign governments
require "dicumented vessels" for cruising. I think there was something
about actual titles of the boats required for documented boats, too. I
remember opting not to go that route to start following my Ebay purchase.

That should be "documented" and not "dicumented." Failure to have your boat
documented could result in your being dicumented.

To legally commit piracy on the high seas, you need a Letter of Marque. I have a draft below for your consideration. Just fill in the blanks and then just one more thing--you'll need the signature of the President of the United States.
Travis
LETTER OF MARQUE
____________ President of the United States of America.
TO ALL WHO SHALL SEE THESE PRESENTS, GREETING:
BE IT KNOWN, That in pursuance of an Act of Congress so codified as 33 USC 386, I have commissioned, and by these presents do commission, the private vessel _____ of the burthen of ___ tons, or thereabouts, owned by ______, of the City of _______, with capability of mounting guns, and navigated by ___ men, hereby authorizing the said _______, the said vessel _____ and the other officers and crew thereof to subdue, seize and take any armed or unarmed terrorist vessel, public or private, which shall be found within the jurisdictional limits of the United States or elsewhere on the high seas, and such captured vessel, with her apparel, guns and appurtenances, and the goods and effects which shall be found on board the same, together with the brigand persons and others who shall be acting on board, to bring within some port of the United States; and also to retake any vessel, goods and effects of the people of the United States, which may have been captured by any terrorist or terrorist sympathizer regime, in order that proceedings may be had concerning such capture or recapture in due form of law, and as to right and justice shall appertain. The said ______ is further authorized to detain, seize and take all vessels and effects, to whomsoever belonging, which shall be liable thereto according to the Law of Nations and the rights of the United States as a power at war, and to bring the same within some port of the United States in order that due proceedings may be had thereon. This commission to continue in force during the pleasure of the President of the United States for the time being.
Given under my hand and seal of the United States of America, at the city of Washington, the __day of ____in the year of our Lord, Two Thousand and Seven.
By the President

Documented means registered through the Coast Guard. No CF numbers. If it is documented,
there are no CF numbers and the only ID is the name.

That means the Coasties are themselves confused? I have CF numbers, but they took my hull number off my registration which is some weird number made up seemingly from my CF number. Sooo I wonder whatsup? I have a beard and had towel (did they think...just unwrapped from my head?) protecting my shoulders from the sun, otherwise just jeans and suspenders. Did they mistake me for Al Kayduh? I could pass for an Iraqi Scheik, especially with my day old Catalina Island (Puma Island) sun tan. We must have had eight wearable PFDs and four cushion/throwables for the two of us, not to mention MOB pole and strobe, at which they never looked.
oh, now it turns out my crew knew this but didn't say anything so as not to make waves..no pun intended. my little boat was a mess of gear and clothes, bed rolls, and food and stuff, I was happy they didn't search much as it was.

RE: [Cal_Boats] Biggerboat-itchsis was:racing old Cal's
Downing, Thomas2007-09-06 11:30 UTC
I'd agree that in general smaller boats are more fun. I tacked my 2-27 single-hand
up and down the channel to my marina on a regular basis. I've done that once on
the A32, just to prove I could. I alwasy think of the 2-27 as the sports car and
the A32 as the motorhome (a very nicely handling motorhome to be sure, but still
a motorhome.)
There are reasons to get a bigger boat, but the only one that relates to more fun
is that you can fit more people aboard! The other reasons all relate to less misery.

Steve,
I don't understand it really, smaller boats are more fun, more like toys, more like sports cars than family sedans or buses.

I finally figured out that the local boat with a Cal sheer stripe is a
T/2. It was in the racing fleet last night when I was out trying to
stay out of their way. and I could see the sail insignia. It is,
indeed, quite "unique." Is the pilothouse-like structure on the cabin
trunk an original feature, or is it something this owner added? Our
local fleet seems to include two Cal 20s, the Cal 39/shortened Cal 40,
and this T/2. Oh yeah, there's a Cal 28 on a mooring that I don't see
sailing much.

The "dog house" on the T/2 is original. It was derived by taking sort
of the shape of the pop-top on the 27, and glasing it into place, sort
of. The reason was that MORC (or was it IOR?) had some kind of head
room requirement that the pop-top would not meet. So this is kind of my
answer. I have the theory right, but my facts are all over the place
(sort of).

So we are reminded, in case we don't see the odd shapes of the IOR boats
in the marina, of the evil effects of racing rules on boat design.

Maybe your CF numbers on the boat don't match the registration ? The absence of a name
when there are CF numbers is not an issue. LOts of one-design classes use the sail
number and do not have a name.
Maybe they were just flexing muscles.

Which is documented. The purpose of documentation is with foreign cruising whihc we
might do eventually. For example, Mexico has been known to try to charge import duty on
cruising boats that are not documented. A documented vessel is not subject to import
duty.

As I recall, documented vessels are given a number that must be
structurally affixed inside the vessel. Our local schooner has the
number carved into a deck beam below.

Right. It is not visible from outside, though. The name and hailing port must be visible,
either on the stern or the bow (name only) on each side. Ours is on the stern.

The "pilothouse" style coach roof is original equipment. IOR rules required
6'1" headroom in a fixed coachroof. Cal raised the poptop to 6'1" internal,
glassed it in, moved the portlights from just above the sheer line to the
new pilothouse, and raised the deck forward of the forward hatch. All else
is identical to the original 27 poptop.
again, not an expert, but this is information gleaned form wiser soles.

That IOR was responsible for more funny-looking boats than any other.
Most of the ones I see are the pinchy-sterned ones with odd-shaped after
sections in the marina. Rules that create incentives to bad hull design
ought to be discouraged. I've never sailed on one of those
funny-sterned models but I understand that they are not well-behaved
downwind..

The pinched stern was a feature of RORC hull designs before the IOR. When the RORC and
CCA rules were combined in the IOR, they took the RORC hull and used the CCA rig
dimensions. After the US owners started to tinker with rulle beating features, the bumps
got really bad. There are paranoids who think the IOR was a Cal 40 killer but it really killed
the Pearsons and a lot of other great CCA boats.
You can see the old RORC stern in pictures of Ted Heath's racers in the Admiral's Cup.
This photo is 1979 but the sterns can be well seen and are the same as they were 10 years
earlier, before the IOR. They were never intended to go downwind as most channel racing
was reaching and beating.

Here's a photo of Heath's first Morning Cloud with which he won the Sydney-Hobart race
in 1969. You can see the pinched stern from the side.

There be a T2 parked next to me Cal 24. Methinks the only resemblance between the original Cal 27 pop top and the T2 is their length. For example, the T2 has the typical IOR pinched stern. There is no resemblance between the T4, the original Cal24 and the Cal24-II, or the later "new" Cal 24 that came in the 80's.

new pilothouse, and raised the deck forward of the forward hatch. All else
is identical to the original 27 poptop.

This sounds like the story of my life...the wind is coming from where I
want to go. But I suppose the point is, "not always."
For most of us, our boats cannot be configured for one specialized
purpose (beating & reaching) but must be capable of general service. My
gripe with the IOR is that it influenced production sailboats, the ones
they sold to all of us for club racing and cruising and everything
else. Marinas are filled with them, with sterns even pinchier than
those in the RORC pictures. If rules are going to have that effect (and
they inevitably do), it's better to have a rule that encourages
efficient and capable hulls that function well in a variety of situations.

Poptop and T/2 have identical hull and stern, etc. some T/2's and some
poptops had a cut out stern for an outboard.

Chris,
Do you speak Spanish? Your description of the "pinchy" stern sounds close
to the Spanish word spelled the same way, but ending in an "e," which has
quite another meaning not to be used in mixed company. I am sure it has
been described by some with the latter spelling.

Worked for me as well. Try this.
Copy the whole thing (not just the blue part) into Notepad or some such,
then get rid of the line break and the <> and other extraneous stuff
outside of http and the second .jpg. Copy result to the browser header.

Just fine, thank you. Bruce also sent it to me. I was examining sterns
as I powered my other boat past the slips at her marina on Saturday.
The most extreme IOR distortions have either been sold or maybe were out
sailing. We had a few there that really looked odd.
