Be careful about invoking Fleet Captain Husar's name when doing boat length
and cost calculations. Keep in mind that he owns 115 feet of Cal. (And
please don't ask him to calculate the costs!)

How many Cal 20 sailors do we have on the list? I was reading Charlie's
price quotes on the Cal 40 and 46 and I just smirked, thinking about my
$900 Cal 20. Using his pricing method (boat plus necessary upgrades)
mine is perhaps a $2,000 boat. Let's see...Cal 20 X 2 = Cal 40 (in
feet). 2 X $2,000 = $4,000. Think I got a bargain. I know it when I
go out sailing.

I thought he was a Fleet Commodore...

So...what kind of ball-park numbers should I expect to see with our Balmar 100-amp alternator at low rpm, rather than the 6 amps I'm getting?
I will check out the suggestions to trace losses on our next trip to PR! I'd just like a target to aim for... :-)

Peter, it looks like the output does evaporate at low revs.

On the Cal 40 we have the Zap stopped Balmar 100 amp alternator, ARS IV
regulator, with Trojan L-16 house batteries, a link 2000 monitor, and a
combiner.
Freewind (Cal 9.2) is set up the same, but with Rolls 6V house
batteries.
We have the "non deep Vee" sheave on the alternator, so it doesn't eat
belts as fast, and I believe it is the same diameter as the stock blue
sheave that eats a belt every 100 hours or less.
Belts used are Gates Green (xl). The most durable I've discovered.
Using the link 2000 we monitor the batteries very closely.
Our usage racing, with a laptop running in screen de-power mode after 30
seconds is @120 amp hours per day. With the lap top off we use @ 60 amp
hours per day.
Our regimen is to start charging daily @ 0600. We run the Vetus diesel @
2,000 rpm, Usually for a two hour period. When possible, we top off the
batteries once more at a 6 pm run, to around 1/2 the discharge.
In the bulk stage @ the first hour the alternator maxes out @ 65-75
amps, until the amp hours needed in the batteries matches the output of
the alternator.
Then we see the alternator match the missing amp hours as the charge
ramp progresses.
So with a typical 125 am hour discharge we see @ 65-75 amp output until
the discharge in the battery is equal to the alternator output.

Remember, that the alternator sheave typically doubles the rpms for the
alternator.
soooooo 2000 engine rpms is 4000 alternator rpms when reviewing the
graph.
