Women's Sailing Seminar - Alameda Ca.
Susan Ingram2007-09-19 00:52
Hi Guys. I am a co-chair of this awesome event. Just wanted to pass
it on -
Island Yacht Club offers the only Women's Sailing Seminar in
Northern California that is exclusively women teaching women the art
of sailing.
On Saturday, students build their own curriculum both in the
classroom and on-the-water. On-the-water courses include basic and
advanced sailing, spinnaker, crew overboard rescue using a
Lifesling, docking and anchoring. Classroom courses are offered in
navigation, engine repair/maintenance, basic sailing, advanced sail
trim and racing basics. The day starts with our opening speaker,
Dana Riley, Director of Aquatics & Boating for the City of Oakland.
After a day of education in the classroom and on-the-water, join us
at the Yacht Club for appetizers, camaraderie and fabulous raffle
prizes, which include sailing gear and boat equipment, all
generously donated by our sponsors.
On Sunday students again choose their curriculum; either one-design
racing on the Oakland-Alameda estuary or cruising on the Bay
watching the Blue Angels during the Fleet Week celebration.
To view details of the course offerings and register on-line, go to
www.iyc.org.

Hey, west coasties:
This addresses the issue I raised recently about how women in our
culture are taught to be frightened by heeling boats, water, etc.
Here's a good chance for women to learn to enjoy sailing. Spread the
word. If you want capable women as crew, or if you want capable women
as your skippers, here's a way to increase their numbers.

Susan, have you heard about the STV Unicorn? It is a 'tall ship' out here on
the east coast. It is sailed by women, and used for training excercise in
leadership and teamwork for women of all ages.
It visits my marina on a regular basis. Interesting boat. Over the last
couple of years they've done a lot of work restoring and improving the
boat.
