Two Sharks Attack Surfer on Video

Bruce Stirling2007-09-20 02:35
I just came across this video of two sharks taking on a surfer in the middle of a wave. Pretty spooky. He makes it out OK. <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lgfRQi8Pls>

Bruce, Some nice videos in there..youtube. I like the one of the great white becoming air borne while snatching a tender young seal pup, all in slo-mo. Then there is the plump young woman who survives but gives her leg to the shark for dinner. Woops! Let's see, for every human shark victim there's how many sharks killed for dinner (altho I don't see shark steak much these day, having been critically depleted?) killed for trophies (see who can catch the biggest Mako, like here in Marina del Rey), by-catch on long lines, or suffocating on the bottom with their fins having been sliced off for shark fin soup at a fancy restaurant? Totally shameful. Jerry Bruce Stirling <br… [at] stirlinglaw.com> wrote: I just came across this video of two sharks taking on a surfer in the middle of a wave. Pretty spooky. Don't misunderstand my posts about sharks. I am totally on their side and fascinated by them. I got really ticked off when I read Robin Lee Graham's account of Dove's solo around the world and learned he shot a visiting shark, apparently for the fun of it. He was in a Lapworth 24 at the time. Don't particularly want to see the video of them gulping down a pup sea lion, either. I would enjoy watching them eat the crew of a sinking whaler or shark fin fishing boat, though. --- In Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com, Gerald Sobel <sobel_solar@...> wrote: > > Bruce, > Some nice videos in there..youtube. ahh life is too short to keep worrying all the time. I am kinda stupid, I have a finite hard drive in my head... I have to chose which stuff to keep and which to delete. I don't recall Robin shooting any shark. I do remember his last pet cat falling off the main boom and falling into the water and being gobbled up by sharks trailing the boats wake, and him being devastated by it even tho he and the cat didn't get along so well. I'd have to get hold of a copy to know for sure, anyone have one? It's not, I don't recall, in the movie version either. Also recall him torn up when his first two cats left, one run over by a truck and the other jumped ship at one island, the island where he got drunk in the aftermath of it, and met his future wife. In fact, I don't recall that Robin even had a rifle on board his boat. I was given Robin's phone number several yars ago but I've never thought to disturb him. My Cal 24 is a near sistership of the Lap 24. It is narrower and has more freeboard. Pretty fast boat actually, I raced against one that was totally restored in the Queen Mary Regatta this summer. Anyway, Robin was a bit traumatized by his voyage, he and his wife bought a ranch in Montana or Wyoming or something like that, like, where people could be shown an anchor and wouldn't know what it was. I'd recommend The Dove as highly as I would Captn' Slocums book. Jerry Marsh Wise <ma… [at] reenactor.net> wrote: Bruce, I hear you. However, it's hard... I have the National Geographic CD collection, which has Robin's account of his adventures back in 1964 (I think). It mentioned he had a .22 cal. weapon, and that he shot and killed a shark out in the middle of nowhere, apparently because it was there. No reason was given for killing the shark, other than it was present. Maybe it was the same shark that ate his cat. That part was not mentioned, although the articles did mention the two kittens he took onboard, and that one jumped ship. I did not recall reading that one was eaten by a shark. I have cats, and that would have upset me, too. I can't remember if the .22 was a rifle or a pistol. It does mention meeting his wife in some foreign locale. I read it again last fall. He DID have a .22 rifle and he does talk about shooting a shark and how much he hated them. I don't remember a shark eating his cat, but they did disappear and get run over, etc. I also found his second book thru amazon used books (okay, I'm wierd and I like to read)... alas, it's not much about sailing. Basically, after his voyage, he realized he wasn't into normal life and he and his wife A: discovered Jesus and B: moved to Montana where they thought they'd be settlers. They built alog cabin, had hardships, lots and lots of God talk, etc. etc. Basically, just a book about their lives. Way different than The Dove. How's that? DEATH OF ANYTHING

Gerald Sobel2007-09-20 16:31 UTC
I remember eating some magic mushrooms, walking into a super market, and walking part the meat department, and being angry that the packages of chicken pieces didn't have the names of the poor dead chickens on them. Disgraceful! Jerry Marsh Wise <ma… [at] reenactor.net> wrote: yep. I don't recall the shark eating the cat, but he shot one because it was following him. :-0 Bruce Stirling wrote: I have the National Geographic CD collection, which has Robin's account of his adventures back in 1964 (I think). -----Original Message----- From: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com [mailto:Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com]On Behalf Of Gerald Sobel Sent: Thursday, September 20, 2007 12:52 AM To: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com Subject: Re: [Cal_Boats]Robin on the Dove, was. Re: Two Sharks Attack Surfer on Video(Bruce) I don't recall Robin shooting any shark. Marsh, I was with you until you mentioned deer. In northeastern Illinois they are a pest. But they're big! They're big pests. They eat my wife's garden, they eat our roses, they crap all over my yard, they eat my spruce tree. They're beautiful, but there are too many of them. I don't live in the country, I live in a close suburb of Chicago, but I live among what we call "Forest Preserves", which are natural areas, dedicated to remain natural forever. Our county has a lot of them, they ring Chicago, but you can't hunt in them. It's funny, I'm a cross-country skier in the winter, and I go to many places here and in Canada, and I always see more wildlife here locally than I do even in Montana or Maine. If you're interested go to chicagowilderness.org to see what is possible in a large metropolitan area. Regards, David Dobbs Cal29 411 Marsh Wise <ma… [at] reenactor.net> wrote: Bruce, I hear you. Jerry and David, If you lived through the sixties, especially if you were military I think you remember it very well. I was lucky to not have to serve in Nam. I did serve in an ICBM unit during the Cuban Missile crisis, and can tell you that our missiles were targeted and ready, and would have gone to their targets. We were scared, because we knew those WMDs would work. We were good at our jobs, those birds would fly. And yet our motto was "Peace is our Profession" Deterence by being strong was the key. It worked and the evil empire fell. Much easier than what we have today! Regards, David Dobbs, former A1C, 567 Strategic Missile Squadron, Fairchild AFB, Wa. Send them to bruce @ stirlinglaw.com and remove the spaces. Had the same email since at least 1997. Should work. I get hundreds everyday. Can hardly keep up. David: You and I can be charter members of the Deer Extermination Society. Here in Michigan we're overrun with them. The DNR raises them for hunters by forestry practices and the population has soared--far in excess of historic numbers. The car-deer accidentsa are way up (greatest in urban areas). They eat everything, severely depressing native vegetation. I pass by a small area that's a stormwater runoff holding area, located in a rural area. It's fenced, and inside there's all sorts of plants and shrubs and trees sprouting up. Outside it's barren, a desert landscape by comparison. I keep hoping that some form of deer AIDS or other plague will strike them. There was the threat of a deer TB epidemic but it seems to have dissipated. Too bad. I would rather have them be uncommon, and a thrill to see, than swarming around us and a pest. I can worry about all this since my boat was hauled yesterday....
