diesel wouldn't stop

Jeff Baumgardner2007-09-25 18:31
This weekend while sailing I started the diesel. When I tried to hit my "off" button, the engine kept running as if the button wasn't pressed. I decided to just let it run till I got back to the dock. When I arrived at the dock it shut off just as it should. My instrument configuration consists of a pull swith to turn on the ignition, gauges, etc. which stays out. Then there is one starter button and one off button. Cal 39 w/ a perkins 4108. Any ideas?

Doesn't your diesel have a manual kill switch? That's really important as sometimes they WON'T shut off. My wife's old Mercedes had a problem w/ the vaccuum system and for a bit, I used to have to use the manual kill. Marsh Jeff Baumgardner wrote: >This weekend while sailing I started the diesel. I had a similar problem with my outboard engine. I have a kill switch mounted in the cockpit, but no matter what I did with the switch, the engine continued to run. I pulled it apart and found corrosion on the wires leading to and from the switch. Cleaned them up and reattached and all was well again. I haven't run into the won't shut off yet, but what comes to mind is that in a jam you can always turn off the fuel cock on your tank and run out of fuel shut off. Then you will have a time getting her restarted because of the air out of the lines, unless you have installed a hand squeeze pump between the tank and (in my case Racor) fuel filter. The squeeze pump allows you to push all the air out of the lines and back into the tank. You will still have to deal with the first problem! Jeff, There should be a short cable protruding out from the front of the 4108 (near the top port side) that you can pull as backup to the solenoid. I've had some intermittent problems with the kill solenoid. My lessons learned: Check the solenoid electrical connections - spade lugs. Make sure they are a tight fit. My solenoid itself was sticking. I cleaned it with WD 40 -- bad. the WD 40 makes the nylon bushings swell up and made the sticking worse. Eventually the WD 40 evaporated and the mechanism loosened up. Use detergent to clean the plastic parts. Solvent/WD40 would be OK on the housing but make sure you dry it before re-assembly. I hope this helps. Duane By the way what is your hull ID number? I assume that your "off" button is a fuel pump kill switch. Sounds like it's not working. When diesels are excessively worn, they can suck crankcase oil past the rings or from the blower bearings and run on that. That's why they have a manual air valve for emergency shutoff. Re: diesel wouldn't stop, addition of priming pump.

That would have been one of my last resort options as I got to the dock. I actually intalled an electric pump on a separate switch(that I leave off) between the Raycor and the engine filter. Works like a charm. I actually didn't need to bleed the injectors last time. The electric pump did it all. I had a blockage from something in the tank once, So I wanted the least ammount of obstructions before the raycor, thats why I installed it after the raycor. --- In Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com, "Mark Alan Stahnke \(MAS Consulting\)" <masconsult@...> wrote: > > I haven't run into the won't shut off yet, but what comes to mind is that in a jam you can always turn off the fuel cock on your tank and run out of fuel shut off.
