Flush-Deck, flat-top or razed-deck;
is that really the question.............?
firstly, i want to point out here that i have been around, and
in-love, with lines of the 60's era Cal-20, 24, 25, and 28 ever sense both they (and
fiver) were that age. there was a big fleet of those boats on the Columbia
River just across from Vancouver Wa. in an area of the Oregon shore that i
considered my stomping ground. a whole moorage full of them in fact, and more
all over the area. and there never was a time that i listened in on the fellows
talking and didn't hear them calling their boats "Flush-decks". those, my
friends, where the first generation "Cal-Flush-Deck" Owners.......
now i don't think they had much of a choice as i understand it, in
what cabin configuration they chouse. only in what length they wanted it in. but
none-the-less, those of us who are now the second generation owners of that
fleet, and their thousands of most beautiful sisters where ever they are. i
think they, like fiver, fell in love with the lines of this Boat among boats.
maybe not everyone was there when they were first set in the water, but i
think that every sailor who owns one can most certainly tell anyone who doesn't,
where "His" deck meets "His" hull!
but don't get me wrong here, because as a boat builder myself of many
decades. i have seen tradition go down the head for many new fangled ideas
that looked absolutely absence to me. BayLiners that i dear anyone to define a
proper sheer on, much-less tell me which way it ot to be going until it
actually starts to move. and i am not even going to talk about hunters and
bayliner sailboats. or maybe someone out there can define the sheer-line on a
modern US sub??? i have seen sailing cats that defy the same.
my point is that in modern ship and boat design, the sky is the limit.
it's not form fallows function anymore. it's function fallows form. and the
boat builders vocabulary simply must fallow suite.
have any of you ever heard of a broken sheer? i have. and that is what
the Cal-flush-decks have. how about a false sheer? well, they have that too!
that is why the nice wide swopy curved line is there to define where the top
of a old-fashioned hull would have been. it's so your eye's don't get lost
with this "new idea". but on the other hand, these boats are all getting to be
in their 40's. so do you all think it's about time to give this new idea a
brake and accept these lovely works of modern art for what they are........
fiver,
Master of The "BB-54"
one of the famous Cal-28 flush-decks
out of Sierra-5, Papa Hotel (in days gone by)
now hove-too, not 10' south of my front porch;
in my Sister Karen's one acre back yard.......
(built like a Battleship; sails like a Sub......)

I noticed that even Jensen Marine described the Cal 28 as a "raised"
deck in the old advertisement found at this link:

I am a bit disappointed that no one commented on the photo of my Cal
28 in a drag race with the Cal 40, White Squall. It took me almost an
hour to come up with this classic drag race, and not a peep! I see
now you all have me listed in your spam filters! It was 100% Cal
content, too.

Yes, It was spiders! The first sailors and inventors of the first successful heavier than air craft, now, it was recently discovered (this week) a certain species of spider weaves a tight web to capture an air bubble, and submerges with his little air tank, goes to and from it for gulps of air while he makes his fishing forays.
