Gig Harbor Cal 43

That Gig Harbor Cal 43 is now on Crig's List with a reduced price.
The listing is here:
http://seattle.craigslist.org/tac/boa/438252204.html
It was about $125k a couple of months ago. They are now asking $97k, which is not that
far out of line if it is in really good shape. These are beautiful cruising boats. I looked at
one in Portland before I bought the 40 and he had ruined it by replacing the chain plates
with external bolt-on ones. Had it been this nice and had the price been a bit lower (He
was asking $95k at the time) I might have bought it.
Pictures of the boat I looked at are here:
http://users.adelphia.net/~anchrwtch/SummerWind/SummerWind.html
I don't know if it is still for sale as I heard he had sold it for about $65k. The chain plates
would have to be fixed and that would probably involve a paint job. The other had pictures
around when it was listed through a broker last summer.

Mike,
You've mentioned several times in the past, and now again, that this
boat was ruined by the external bolt-on plates. Forgive me, but could
you explain how the modification ruined the boat?

The sheeting angles are different. The genoa cannot be sheeted inside
the lifeline.
The spreaders are now too short so the shroud angles do not match the
spreader angle and the loads are not properly distributed. If you
want to restore the original chain plates, there are holes in the
hull to patch and it will require a paint job. It doesn't look like a
Cal 43 should look. Those are a few reasons.
I would want an experienced rigger to g over it and it might require
new spreaders to get the angles right. Otherwise, under heavy load,
the spreader might collapse due to improper load angles at the
spreader tip. I haven't calculated the loads but the design calls for
a right angle between the spreader and the lower segment of the upper
shroud. The shift of the chain plate outboard changes that angle to
an obtuse one.

i thought the angles between the spreader and the shroud were suposed to be equal above and below the spreader.

My two boats both have pivoting spreaders, which allows you to bisect
the angle (tip the spreaders up a bit). Some boats have fixed spreader
sockets on the mast. That doesn't give you any choice of angles.
The downside of the pivoting arrangement is that the spreader can move
downward, as for example from the tension on a burgee halyard running to
it.
Our eminent Rog Jones gave a plan for making little supports to go on
the shroud under the spreader tip and I'm going to be doing that. My
Cal 20's starboard spreader kept drooping this summer and I had to make
a temporary fix--a piece of dowel, split, drilled, and fastened around
the shroud with a hose clamp, and tightened enough so it would support
the spreader but loose enough that I could push it up with the boat
hook. I had replaced the old wire securing the shroud to the spreader
and apparently it wasn't tight enough.
