Cal 28 update!

Lord Nougat2007-10-03 22:52 UTC
So, I went to the marina this morning to pay my slipfee, and also to talk to the dockmaster about that Cal 28. The dockmaster was not there yet, but his helpful minion was, so he gladly took my payment, and then tried to talk me out of wanting that "old wreck" of a Cal 28, "it doesn't have a running engine, so Tom (the dockmaster) doesn't feel it would even be worth trying to sell..." so, apparently, they're planning on taking advantage of some awful harbor cleanup thing, where the LA Harbor will take 'derelict' vessels, and just scrap em. This is too awful, so if anybody with more money than me wants her, by all means call Cabrillo Way marina in San Pedro. Ostensibly, Tom might have someone call me, but I got the impression they have no interest in selling her regardless, and will need pestering, possibly with cash. I was really hoping the prospect of me just paying the slipfee on it would be enough, but I think he's hoping to get rid of it entirely and bring in someone with a fancy new shiny boat with a longer LOA that will pay more. If someone were willing to actually pay something more than a few hundred bucks for her, she may yet be saved. I looked again at her in the daylight, and there's a rusted old lock on the lazarette where the outboard well might be, it didn't look like there was an opening down there from what I could see, but they are cleverly hidden...and also it might be glassed over as it does have an inboard. The official story on that is that it leaks oil, otherwise the crank turns over, and seems like it might start if inclined, but since it doesn't hold oil, oh well, we'll just throw her away. I haven't given up yet, but people are starting to try to talk me out of it already, so if there is somebody out there who's wife isn't saying "we need a new fridge washer/dryer"... and other boring stuff more than an awesome boat and can afford to bribe, ahem, I mean buy this boat, another awesome Cal might be saved. Lord, Don't give up the ship! I met one couple who sailed their 28 all over the Channel Islands, loved thier boat. I met them while I was on the hard at Anacapa Boat Yard in 97. I think they had an Atomic 4 in her. I don't know if the inboards had a well as well, I think it came one way or the other, but you can always add a scissors type OB bracket and a long shaft to her. I saw one on Ebay that even had a transom cut out for the OB. They go for about $3k in rough condition. I would not be discouraged about the boat if its cosmetically rough. The great thing about these boats, is that there built so stoutly, you really can keep em going indefnitely. It sounds like they may just "give" someone the boat. Cant it be taken to some other marina or stored on the hard for a few months just to give it a thorough cleaning/repair if this place wont let you keep it there? Hey, Rick! Thanks for the photo update on the progress with your boat. For the record, it was Rick's Cal 28 that weighed in at just over 8,000 lbs. when trucked. Looks like you're well into the fun you described earlier. I wish I could pull my boat and truck her back to phoenix for a few months. Give her a chance to dry out, too, so I could check out blisters and other fun things. Keep us posted. And thanks for the Cal 28 boat link! I told the guy building my trailer to take his time once I was at the marina. Then I learned my GMC half-ton pickup, notwithstanding its huge V-8, is still not quite the truck needed to get the 28 over the mountains and down the other side safely. Fiver did it, but she's got a duallie (sp?). Every time I cross the mountains, I picture myself being pushed out of control down the other side. I've taken all of the back roads trying to find the best crossing. Looks like it is up I-5 to 15 to 215 via Riverside, Palm Springs, and then across to Phoenix on I-10. Once I got her to Phoenix, there is no way I would ever get her into my driveway. I live in an old house downtown with really high concrete curbs. I once used a big Suburban to back a speedboat into my very narrow driveway (must have been built for a Model A). Broke a weld on the trailer protecting the prop, and once in place, the boat has not moved. Too much of a crown in the roadway. The speedboat is 22 feet long with a 454 V-8. Got it from a client with no money. [I must be the only lawyer to accept a leaking boat for payment]. Things are looking a bit dicey to the wife and neighbors. Everyone in my family tells me to get rid of the boat! It sits nicely in front of a covered old Jaguar that they also all want me to get rid of. I am a sentimental fool. They all need to be gone before I can even think about a Cal 20 or Cal 28 anywhere near here. I could never get the Cal 28 in (or out) of my driveway, much less the cul-de-sac I am on. The boat would also sit too high to make it under my carport. I think I would be arrested and put away.

You could probably find a spot to rent west of the mountains but a lot closer to Phoenix. Maybe Yuma. There are thousands of winter motorhome spots around Quartzite and Yuma. Store it in an industrial park for six months. Hmmmmm.... yeah, a ½ ton is too small. I surely wouldn't try it w/ my Cal 25... I'm looking at a ¾ ton Suburban w/ a 454... I bet I could get it in the cul-de-sac (I'd back it in), but for the carport, you might need to, uh, remodel it a bit (pulls chainsaw cord). Isn't there somewhere close by you could park her to work on? As for the curb, you could make some ramps or something... it's doable, just might take some work. I'd love to find a trailer, but unless I find it cheap (I have this problem w/ the trailer costing way more than the boat), it ain't gonna happen. Here is photo of problem area undergoing stucco repair. See speedboat on left. Old Jag hidden behind it. Carport too low, too. Starts to look like parking lot and pretty tacky. I would love to clear it out, but I hesitate for some reason. That's why I started Freecycle Phoenix <http://groups.yahoo.com/group/freecyclephoenix/>, to get rid of my junk and other stuff. By the time you go from San Diego to Yuma or Quartzite, you've already come out of the highest mountains with at least a 6 per cent down grade, complete with pullouts for all of the 18 wheelers that lost their brakes. I backed the boat into the position shown here, but the crown on the road in front of my driveway was so pronounced, it was like backing into a rut and the steel trailer prop guard bottomed out into the concrete drive, breaking it. IF you got the other boat out, MAYBE you could put the Cal there. Maybe, I can't see how big it is. Alas... the car port is more substantial than I thought... how about a local storage place? Somewhere to keep her and work on close to home?! As for the driveway, you could fill inthe area w/ gravel and make it a really low transit. Big grades, sure, make sure trailer has brakes on ALL the axles and make sure it's good befor eyouleave. Last, I don't know what you're gonna pull w/ but a Powesrstroke diesel F-350 outfitted w/ an engine brake would help. Hi Guys! i'm not quit sure if you all are still talking about the Cal-28 in San Pedro, or if the talk is all about Mr. Bruce's 28 and how to get it over those little hill's you got down there in California........... but do you mind if i weigh in on this? as far as how big of truck one needs; any good Chevy 454 that is no older than 92 or so. even a half-ton will work because the dead-load is on the trailer axle's. the truck is only pulling. and if it has a big engine, then it must have a big cooling system to go with it. and a big transmission too! what do you think, your back wheels going to slip???? the only reason i need a 4x4 dually is because on a steep slimy wet launching ramp that may not even be paved all the way down, it can be a little hard to get a 6000 or 8000 lb boat back out of the water and up the damn ramp without such a big truck. now if your truck is a stick-shift, that is even better! just put it in a good gear to keep the RPM's in a good zone, and stay in the right lane all the way up the hill. just like the big guys do. keep extra water with you...... your 1/2 ton truck is just so in how much it will carry in it's bed. mine is a one-ton. but that is not the limit of what i can tow with it. hells bells, i have had damn near 20,000 lb's behind it before. so i think a 1/2-ton should be able to tow at least 8000 lb's, don't you??? if your worried, just add a 12" elect fan to the front of your radiator and have a switch on the dash to turn it on. then add a water temp gauge on the block so you can see what you temp is all the time. and then change your thermostat out for a 180 degree if you have a computer controlled engine. or a 160 degree if your engine is older. and then make the oil in both your engine and your automatic tranny is full synthetic; the best you can buy. you can also count the rows of core's in your radiator. they come in #2,3 and 4 row type. if you don't have a 4 row type. go down to the parts store and see what one cost. it is seldom over $200, and is well worth the bucks for towing. Ok, this is for Bruce; i didn't see the picture of your drive-way or your car- port. but if you have a problem with a *dip* in the street, just get a grunch of framing lumber (2x4's 2x6's ect 8 or 10 foot long). just toss them in the dip or up against the curb. they are cheap and will fill-in the area so the trailer-tiers don't drop into the dip. Kool Aey! :)(: you can even drive a cat (tractor) across it...... as far as coming down there to help you out; no problem. love to! but please remember, i am living on a fixed income; and gas money to southern California and back would be very expensive i think. buying a new truck mite be cheaper.......... :)(: from the very cold & wet far North; fiver..... I dunno. I think there's a towing weight limit on a ½ ton pickup. As for the age... I don't know about that either. I'd rather have a solid turbo 350 or 400 trans then the new ones that explode. For his load, there is NO way I'd do that w/ a ½ ton. Just me, but what happens if it gets away? I know someone who was towing too much and it got away going down a hill and he tried to use the engine to brake it (he was a truck drivah likes me) and it blew the 454 up. I notice heavy duty half ton pickups are rated at 8000 + for towing. Fiver's answer was correct about the load on the truck. It will only be carrying about 1000 lbs, which is a half ton. Trailer brakes that work properly, correct tires at proper pressure, choosing a gear which allows the drive train to work without stress, even if it is going slow, going at least as slow down hill as you came up, common sense. If a load "gets away from you", the difference in load carrying capacity won't mean a thing. the slight difference in brake area between a half ton and a 1 ton won't mean much either I'm betting my T/2 loaded for two weeks of cruising, along with the overkill designed trailer upon which it sat, was about the same as the 28 plus trailer. Towed mine from Montana to Santa Barbara for a CCCCC and back. Towed another one from Chicago to western Montana with a 1972 International Harvester. Waltz with the one ya brung to the dance. (You'll note that waltz is a SLOW dance!) Reggie I have since stepped up to an F-350 Super Duty Crew Cab long box 4x4 diesel. Probably my first and last new truck. Have truck, will travel. How do you go down a hill slowly w/ out a manual trans? Also, when I say get away, that means the brakes have shit on you. You need somethinglike an engine brake and big, heavy duty brakes on ALL axles. ANd by gawd, there is NO WAY IN HELL I'd haul that boat w/ a ½ ton pickup. No sir, NO f-in' way! You'r ejust looking for trouble. I've seen enough 4 wheelers w/ wrecked trailers.. I think I'll beleive what I know. Trailer traction

I recommend putting hoppers with slide valves leading to the rear wheels, some sand, like them big steam locomotives, and maybe some molasseses so it sticks in place, altho I dunno if they ever used molasseseses on dem locomotives way back then, but they wasn't pulling heavy trailers up steep slimy boat ramps. Interestin' experiment, no? I burned out a few clutches trying to pull out my light weight plywood catamaran up some ramps, with its heap powerfull (NOT) 144cu in six. and three on the column. hey, Jerry; there was a time when i thought i was going big-time moving up from my 170 cid to a 200 cid (all of which are brothers to the 144 cid). but i never thought of the trick of using a sand hopper...... yo, daddy Marsh! i once towed a 40' house-trailer from portland oregon, down US- 101 to San Francisco. i used a 1957 2-door ford ranch-wagon with a 390 and a close-ratio borg-warner T-10 4-speed with 12" clutch. never used the car's brakes at all as i remember. the nice thing about a dually over a 3/4 ton is that i have much bigger brake drums in the stern then they stick in the 3/4-ton. i have towed 40' foot 5th wheel house trailers that weigh-in at 12 to 14,000 lb's. and where i could only get the light's to work on them; no elect-brakes! but with the big brakes on the dually, no problem. the thing was so bloody heavy it wasn't going to jack-knife, not with my truck being half as long as the trailer its self. and i find i can just ride those big drums, let-up for a minute or so. and then slow the beasty down again no mater how steep the mountain. i have never ever found a mother i couldn't get up or down a hill out here if i just took my time. and i didn't always have my dually either. i think it's all a matter of how you look at the problem. a mountain road is nothing more than a given amount of energy that you must expend, or dissipate. or some combination of both. it's all a problem of managing your heat dynamics. your engine's cool system, your trucks braking system, your trailer's braking system, your transmissions cooling capacity. the driver must simply keep his or her speed slow enough going up or down so as to be able to dissipate the extra heat they are producing, through the systems they have at their disposal. this without overwhelming those system's ability to do that job. smaller system's require slower speeds. that is the way i have always looked at it....... :)(: fiver

Here is an online photo that looks like my truck. Says it is a 2002 GMC Sierra 1500 anyway. Same color. . . . That's gotta count for something. That's what I have, and at the time they said it was the largest V-8 option. I used to know all details about my car, but as I got older I never had the time to spend with them. The photo suggests there should be no problem. It is an automatic shift with some button I am to push if towing anything. I suggested a few times to Debbie that I wanted to haul the boat back to Phoenix to work on it. She nixed the idea because she likes her new friends at the marina and going out as often as possible. I think she knows that once I start messing around, it could be a while before things are ready for the water again. That speed boat has not moved in 12 years.

If you do elect to tow with this truck, check for the capacity of the ATF cooler, and if you have an oil cooler. If no oil cooler, consider adding one, it will make a big difference in engine temps when pulling uphill. Engine oil actually plays a pretty big role in cooling an engine. td From: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com [mailto:Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com]On Behalf Of Bruce Stirling Sent: Friday, October 05, 2007 9:17 AM To: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com Subject: RE: [Cal_Boats] Re: Cal 28 update ( and towing Bruce's Cal-28) Here is an online photo that looks like my truck. I thought there was probably a weight difference, but the picture was encouraging. Maybe the best and most fun way is to sail to Ensenada and then truck across the width of Baja to San Felipe, and then sail across to Rocky Point and recover her there. Just thinking outloud here. Maybe have the work done on her in San Felipe where the cost of labor is still cheap. --- In Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com, "slickbutfoxbuger" <fiverhrairoo@...> wrote: > > my Dually's got an auto..... :)(: > > > ****************** > --- In Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com, Marsh Wise <marsh@> wrote: > > > > Dude, that trailer there weighs a fraction of what your boat > weighs. > > Also, I'd worry about the auto trans. :-0 > > >

so does my Super Duty diesel. these automatic transmissions are not your father's powerglides. If things were REALLY bad, the truck in the picture could be shifted into low range. I suspect the trailer in the picture is almost as heavy as the maximum tow rating of the truck, for advertising purposes. guess we need to read the sales literature. Weight affects things like starting and stopping, both highly important things on the highway, especially if the trip involves mountains. But wind resistance would probably affect decisions, too. The travel trailer in the picture has a big flat front and isn't very aerodynamic. I seem to recall that wind resistance increases with the square of the speed, so highway-speed travel makes it a big issue. Boats are probably more aerodynamic to haul than big box trailers. The last time I moved, I was hauling U-Haul trailers with my 4-cylinder, 5-spd. Ranger (!). I was heading NW. On those days when there was a good blow from the NW, it was acccelerator-floored, 4th gear all the way, at about 50 mph. Maybe that's why one of the U-joints failed a couple years later. We drove 140 miles south to pick up a donated Cal 20 on his trailer. It was on a cradle on the ground. We pried it up and jacked it up (one jack, one big pry bar, a lot of wood-timber cribbing) and then used steel tube rollers to move it onto his trailer. Once it was on the trailer it was smooth sailing back to TC via the highway. The route took us past lower Michigan's highest point and back down again to lake level. Chris Campbell
