Caltopia is a SF Bay rendezvous. I posted photos of this as well as last year's Caltopia on my blog at http://cal39.blogspot.com. See the post for Friday Sept 14, 2007 and see the archive for Sept 2006. I also have a lot of info on my Cal 39 in the maintenance log and general sailing log (see Spindrift's in-house links). dEMo mentioned sailing on "Bribon" - I believe that is Peter and Regina Audet's boat now (used to belong to a fellow named Rafael) and it is a 1978 Cal 39-2. I can put you in touch with a couple of Cal 39 owners on the east coast, but I'd rather not post their email addresses on the group without permission. So, email me directly. The original poster mentioned a 5 foot draft and asked about wings. If this is that model, it does have wings on the keel. Mike Kennedy Conquest Cal 40 # 96

'Bribon", the (our) Cal 39 mentioned, is the 39-2, built in 1978, Lapworth design, two-cabin version. She still sails in the Fajardo, Puerto Rico area as with Rafael, the previous owner. We have the 5' 6" draft keel and regular rig (which seems to be referred to as a tall rig, an optional even "taller"rig was available, apparently). We have a "generic" 120 genoa, not really fitted to the boat. We rarely get light airs in the area, but with the prevailing conditions of 14-18 knots and 4-6 ft. waves the boat stands on its feet very well, with a steady, powerful motion through the water. She is not a greyhound, but is closer to a racer than a tank! I could see her moving well in light air with the appropriate fore-sail. The engine cover is a bit of a bear to remove for full access: it's the sink and stairs! There is decent access from a cabinet door, removable lid, and lazarette. The bilge is relatively shallow, due to the hull design and internal ballast. I do like not having to worry about keel bolts... Peter

Peter, try a bigger Genoa. We have a friend who races with a 170 genoa on his Cal 34 and usually places first in most of the races he enters. Check out Minney's on the internet, they're here on the west coast-Newport-but they have the lowest prices and best selection more often than not. Another cost beater is Kelley's in San Pedro. The Cal 39 has a PHRF slightly better than the Cal 40 but may under perform it in strong surfing conditions?? Jerry "C. He can offer his criticisms without being rude. And he answers e-mail questions, too. In case anybody is unaware of it, he's been doing monthly boat reviews in _Sailing_ magazine for many years. There are usually three reviews in each issue. It's a very good sailing magazine, with great photography and always-wise columns by its publisher, Bill Schanen and others. Chris Campbell
