Dan Casey and Rick Starr should be there this evening. They left Santa Barbara around 9 PM with a stop at Santa Cruz Island and a morning departure for Howlands. Just think. Some on this list are already having a great time as we sit here and think about it. Take some good photos!!! HIyall, Well, Eric and I got packed to leave at noon today and reconsidered with the wx predicting gusts up to 35mph or possibly more. We did the trip in such conditions a few years ago and it was wet wild but fun. But... I still have a wrenched lower back from doing some stern anchor tossing on my last visit to the Island 4 weeks ago, and Eric was similarly beat to shhhh..and not quite yet recovered from his own back strain, so we decided to wait until early AM Sat to make the trip over. I hope our big salmon fillet will be ok with that! Arrgh! Sorry to miss dinner tonite on Fin's yacht. Groan! Eric and I sailed out to the CCCCC late Sat morning, leaving the Marina del Rey breakwater at 12:25. We motored briefly unltil the breeze began to build, then caught strong breezes in the mid teens all the way into Howland's getting in in a record breaking time of 5 hours (record for us anyway). Enjoyed comradery and and good eat'ns (we brought along a big fillet of salmon) Champagne, wine. Did you know Australian Sheep Dogs (I think from the J-Boat group) really love salmon? On the way back Sunday morning we spied spouting plumes of steam. We saw a whale meandering around the West End. Afterwards, we tried to get in to see the Buck an ears at Isthumus late Sat. evening but it was a mad house, no slips at all. Tried to go around into Cat Harbor yesterday afternoon, but got hit by immense wind gusts coming down the cliffs, it was unreal...and thank goodness all we had up was a reefed mains'l. We sailed thru wild winds with storm jib up back to West End expecting terrible Santana conditions and found a nearly dead calm, had to motor back till we got close to Palos Verdes and got into some nice beam reach conditions with wind in the teens. It sounds like you missed some excitement with the Santa Anas. Here is Latitude 38's report: http://www.latitude38.com/lectronic/LectronicLat.lasso This is a great resource for sailors if you don't already get it by e-mail. I was a bit concerned about the boats at Howlands getting spanked by a big northeasterly blow, which is what Santa Ana winds are. Sounds like they were OK but maybe we'll get some other stories by those who went early. I did get the head replaced in the 40 Sunday and that seems to have solved the problem of backflow from the intake filling the bowl. I was concerned about sinking the boat in the night as the bowl would fill right up unless the sea cock were closed after each use. I replaced the old toilet with a Raritan model recommended by Practical Sailor and it seems to stay dry. Now I need to go to Catalina again to test it. I didn't hear anythng about that Cal 28 so maybe that fell through. Mike Kennedy Conquest Cal 40 # 96

Mike, I called Capt. Kurt late Friday morning and he said it was blowing in the mid twenties at Howland's but they were well enough sheltered by the cove. They had sailed down night before in 25 to 35 knots with just a reefed main. Did'nt feel like thrashing my aching body or Eric's, or our tired boat thru heavy winds and steep seas, when I could put off voyage until Sat. What do they say, wisdom is the better part of valor?? I heard about a group of kids on a boat that had to be rescued by the Coast Guard...from my girl friend who was watching late news on TV (or radio)...that had been heading for Catalina on Friday and was taking on water. Because of this, I thought there might have been some vacancies available on the string tie for small boats Sat. nite, but after winding our way thru the jammed anchorage and moorings in the moonless dark at 11 PM the Harbor Patrol said no vacancies, chased us away and told us to head to the anchorage. I asked one anchored boat how deep it was, they said "90 feet" so we headed back to Howland's for the night.
