Hey Jim, I might have a keel for you if you'd rather. Cost - get rid
of the rest of the boat (completely shot and stripped fiberglass
hull, useable spars, a few other parts including damaged but usable
mahogany rudder).
Let me know and I'll make sure it's still around - I'm sort-of the
owner but I had previously told the owner of the land it's sitting on
he was free to dispose of it if he found a good opportunity.

Camano Island, call it 50 miles north and a bit to the west. No, that's
Whidbey you're thinking of; Camano is smaller and tucked between Whidbey and
the eastern shore of the Sound.
When I say useless fiberglass hull, I'm not kidding. Repairs would require
completely cutting off and replacing about 20% of the hull at the bow. Every
useful part has been stripped off - some of the Cal 20 specific parts remain,
but not attached to the hull. And the spars are in good shape - a
black-anodized mast and a plain aluminum boom - but the rest of the rigging
is shot and/or missing. The keel is somewhat pitted but intact and already
separated from the hull. I put a lot of work into this boat before
discovering that the hull was beyond repair; major impact damage poorly
repaired on the nose and stress fractures into the laminate back at the end
of the vberth. (Unlike SOME unloyal Cal owners, I "jumped ship" into a Cal 25
instead of some silly "other" manufacturer...)
For this precise situation - someone with a Cal 20 close by that could use the
parts for repairs and spares - it's perfect, and I'd rather that person have
it for the use they could make of it. For anything else, save perhaps the
backup "but I don't WANT to cut it up into chunks for a landfill" plan of
turning it into a playground for kids, it's useless. You would be better off
by far building one from scratch.
The only reason this hull isn't already in a landfill is because it's not
hurting or costing anything where it is and I had some lingering hope of
finding a more honorable end to her bones.

Matt, sounds like your enemies wouldn't even want it, much less your
buddies. :- ]
Some valuable parts are glas parts made for the boat that are not easy
to reproduce (e.g., slider hatch, hatch covers).
Now about that CAL 25... How is it doing?
Cheers

I'm looking around for a pair of the original-style bronze hinge from
the forward hatch, to use on another boat. Do those remain? And
oooh...a black anodized mast...if you weren't so far away, I'd be there
in an instant.

Pretty much. <grin> As I said, the expected ends were either landfill or -
maybe - she could be cleaned, painted, set in a sandbox and given a fake rig
for kids to climb on. The only exception is the case where someone else is
thinking of parting out their Cal 20 because of a missing major component
that happens to be fine on this boat.
> Some valuable parts are glas parts made for the boat that are not easy

A few of those are already gone to other Cal 20s, most no one was interested
in when I offered them earlier for the cost of shipping. This is an "older"
(hull #1394) California-built Cal 20 with the "skylight" in place of the
forward hatch (solid fiberglass, no gelcoat) and single lazarette.
> Now about that CAL 25... How is it doing?
Fine. Firecracker, Cal 25-1 (outboard model) #1194, moored in Port of Everett
Marina, member of Milltown Sailing Association, sails regularly. Needs new
sails, could use some new running rigging, other little details, but
otherwise she's in good shape.

I agree with Marsh. These boats are in limited supply. They're not
making any more. Each one that gets cut up is one fewer great boat for
people to sail and have fun on. It's a cheap way to enjoy sailing on a
boat that performs well. Here you have an opportunity to combine two
boats into one, where otherwise we're going to see two fewer Cal 20s.
Say yes to the keel, hang it on your good hull, and enjoy the Cal 20.
Or sell it at low cost to some newbie who wants to sail but doesn't have
the bucks for a big shiny Benehunter.

--- hi matt thanks for the info.
i think at this time it would be a job for someone else i am unable
to start a rekeel project. now if someone else wanted to take on that
project that would be great. the boat floats fine and in fact is
still moored at shilshole marina in seattle. we are renting a trailer
next week to dispose of the boat. i think the boat will exist till
thursday.

moored at shilshole marina in seattle. it's name is Salley and
supposedly was a canadian built cal 20.
