"the fiver report....." (day at the races)
fi… [at] aol.com2007-10-22 04:30 UTC
Well..... it's not far down to paradise,
At least it's not for me.
And if the wind is right, you can sail away,
And find tranquillity.........
Oh...... the canvas can do miracles,
Just you wait and see,
Baby, believe...... me.
Hmmmm..... hmm.

Greeting's........
at 50-f, it is too bloody cold to sail in California, and just 10
degrees above January in Newport. that is if we are to believe Harken's
calendar. but then the icy deep water of Puget Sound; deep enough to hide both
whale and sub; are probably not the first thought on anyone mind at Harken's
corporate offices. none-the-less Harken's best (if not Lewmar) damn-well should
be on the hardware of any fool, or sailor, daring these depths as the
squall-lines of October cris-cross the sound, and the Pacific through's fearsome
winter-Gail's at the Olympic's as if to knock Them down. only to see The Tall
Olympic part these Gail's to have them re-converge again on to the east in
The Sound, loosing storms that have destroyed no less than three Major
Bridges.....
not sailing weather you say, raze the storm-warning and call out
the CG...... well, Capt. Fred; did you see any coasty's out there. i seem to
remember seeing some headed in, now that i think about it.....
yes, the Nemesis was on stbd tack, the wind was 20 steady and
gusting to 30. white-caps on the swells and she was lying-over about 15 to 20
degrees most the time. the day had just started to show signs of getting fun,
don't you think, Capt......? anyway, that is when the CG came by, headed for the
coffee shop. guess they didn't like the cold or something.
the day started out for fiver at 600 hour's with a wake-up cell call
from my Sister. two Yoplait, a morning Frappuccino (cold yppie coffee in a
bottle), and a stop at the local StarBucks for a Lattie' and coffee and
munchies'. then it's off down I-5, 30 minutes to Tacoma yacht club and the Nemesis;
where i have been most graciously invited for a leisurely fall sail-race. and
to enjoy the beautiful autumn colors, sunny sky's and peaceful water's
lapping at the hull. all this while Capt. Fred single-handedly, and with no
handicap, race's seven other boats. the fastest of which is a new J-35; all of
which are one or another sort of race boat and not cruiser. unlike the Beautiful
Cal-2-30 that the Capt. and i were fearlessly, if not foolhardily, pitting
against the fleet!
of course, i did not know this when i was welcomed aboard by the
Capt.. and soon after having a good look see around his girl, he and i cast-off
and set sea-ward in search of pray to soundly trounce in an easy race. so we
started east across the bay from Ruston on Point Defiance, to a place 1.75 mi
east of Browns Point south side. this commonly known as *CYCT*. about a 5
nautical mi passage by the quartermasters eye; not accounting for set & drift to
the E.S.E. of course (on the flood). once there, with the Capt. i attended
the Skipper's meeting (not that i understood one bloody thing). a meeting of 35
minutes or so, a ballast stop, and a look at a few boats in the harbor. then
off to the races's!
the race i'd say (after watching it), was 3.5 mi. cross the bay to an
anchor buoy in front of a restraint and back to another such anchor buoy on
the near shore, then back cross the bay to the self-same buoy and round to
port and back over the finish-line....!
being the Tactician he was, Nemesis was first over the line to start by 30
seconds i think. first at any-rate. but you just knew the *J* would be first
of the fleet to show us her heels even if it took it a bit of time to do so
with our lead. what we needed was a squall-line, what we had was a bunch of
light-air boats with new rags flying! just shows that money can buy
something.....
so back and fourth the Capt. went. never giving an inch that another
didn't steal with money and youth. by the last lap, we were number five out
of seven, and the other two were not even close (probably didn't get home
till mid-rats they did). we then came around; he gave me the helm (and i sucked
the paint of the committee boat with the wind suction as i passed by), giving
the Capt. talking distance to bid the Fellows good-by as we sailed for
home-port. and that is when the fun began. the open water of the Sound......?
Heel girl, heel !
and we not talking about a dog..........
fiver.......
