Diesel heater installed Cal 3-29 - pictures

It's going to be a cozy winter this year. My wife is thrilled! I
purchased and installed a Dickinson Newport diesel heater. We've been
wanting to do this for a long, long time, but finding the right place
for the stove was the tricky part. My wife didn't want to give
up "her station" sitting/reading area, so I had a real challenge on
my hands on where I could put the stove on our Cal 3-29.
When the boat was new we had a forced air Wallace kerosene heater
mounted on the forward bulkhead above the head. It never worked right
from day one and found it's way into the dumpster many years back.
Since then we've been using a plug in heater at the dock and underway
we used a Origo alcohol heat pal. They are nice, but the price of
fuel is getting down right ridiculous!
As I understand, the Dickinson propane heaters are really nice, but I
didn't want yet another fuel onboard. I have gas for the dinghy
outboard, alcohol for the 2 burner Origo stove, and diesel for the
inboard. I wanted something safe, cheap to run, and a stove that had
a proven track record. I believe I got this with the Dickinson
diesel heater.
To get the ball rolling I cut a cardboard box up into the shape of a
diesel heater and we taped it up in different place in the boat to
see how it would look. We finally came to a decision to mount the
heater midship facing forward. There was nothing really to mount it
to, so I purchased a beautiful teak board ($150 bucks... WHEW!) to be
able to anchor the stove safely. We did have to cut into a cushion
slighly to make it work.
We also purchased a EroFan that runs off the heat generated from the
stove. We bought the bigger of the 2 offered and it really moves the
air off the heater. I also mounted a 12 volt fan, to blow off heat
from the stove pipe.
One thing I've learned... a warm wife is a very happy wife! :)

Very Nice!
I really like these units, and had one on the Cal 40, when she was up in
the Pacific Northwest. 30-40f outside, and 80f degrees inside the cabin,
made it really hard to get crew topsides to do their watch!
We used a blow torch to start-it to get away from the otherwise smoky
start.
The only failure we had, was going down the Oregon/ California Coast
(2002), when a 40-50 knot gust, backdrafted the unit, creating a fire
inside the cabin,,, until I cut off the power and hit the unit with a
fire extinguisher. It made a mess... and was retired.
We had the small cone exhaust hood, at deck level.
Enjoy the great unit, just keep out of big winds with the unit running.
Cheers,
dEmO

Last year, I went with an Espar. It is tucked up in the cockpit coaming in
the aft port lazarette locker. One vent into the main cabin. Last spring,
with frost on the deck, we were as toasty warm as could be inside. Like you,
diesel heat means safer heat as well and my wife, who grew up in Florida, is
happier about fall through spring cruising. I would recommend one of these
Espars to anyone.
