Hey Keith, Thanks for the good words about the Cal 40, I am really excited about L'Esprit Libre. I am enthusiastic about digging in and getting her ready for some real sailing. I am sad to be putting my Bristol 30 up for sale but knowing that I am stepping up to a Cal 40 removes the sting. Kemah is a really nice sailing community and tends to be much warmer then the Seattle area. I am currently at the Boardwalk Marina and I like the close proximity to resturants and night life. Live aboard is not a problem here and the slip fees are reasonable. Sailing in and out of Kemah is very good, quick entry into Galveston bay. The depth of Galveston Bay is not real deep but I don't think our 6' draft will be much of a problem. The boats that have a 7+ draft become more at risk. The further into Clear Lake you go the harder it is to get in and out during the winter months so I recommend the marina's that are closer to the bay. You would find a good slip at places like Watergate marina, Boardwalk Marina, Portifino, Waterford and others. The bridges are no problem for most sailing vessels, not sure of the exact clearance but I would guess at 65' or more. Let me know if there is anything I can do should you decide to make Texas your new...warmer...home. You will like the sunshine and warm weather but be prepared for Hot and Humid in the summer months. I myself love the sunshine and warm gulf water. Can you tell me a little about Kemah? My family of 4 live aboard our Cal 40 Kismet in the Seattle area and seeking warmer climates next fall. Kemah showed up on our marina search, it seems to be a very pro liveaboard place. Will the bridge over the bay clear the Cal 40 mast and is the water deep enough for our 6 ft Keels? Cal 40's are special creatures. In the era of Shelby cobras, drug, sex and rock and roll, Bill Lapworth penned the lines of a radical new design that rocked the world of ocean racing. And they still keep winning. Stan Honey & Cal 40 illusion wins 1994 TRANSPAC single-handed race. Skipper Charlie Guildner & Cal 40 Kismet wins 1996 VIC Maui race. Skipper Peter Rebovich & Cal 40 Sinn Fein wins 2006 Neuport-Bermuda race. Pretty amazing for 40 year old boats. The huge cockpit is great for 8 of your best freinds. The boat practically sails itself. She will take you around the world in safety. She will put trophies on your mantle. And she can rock you to sleep. Cal 40's are magic. I encourage to dive in and get your boat sailing, the technology is simple, fiberglass and plywood, screws and bolts. And when you are done - you really have something. Plenty of us raving Cal 40 owners out here to give you support. best wishes Keith Shroyer Cal 40 Kismet <!-- { padding:0px 14px;} hr{ } #hd{ color:#628c2a;font-size:85%;font-weight:bold;line-height:122%;margin:10px 0px;} #ads{ margin-bottom:10px;} .ad{ } .ad a{ color:#0000ff;text-decoration:none;} --> <!-- { } #hd{ font-weight:bold;font-size:78%;line-height:122%;} .ad{ margin-bottom:10px;padding:0 0;} --> <!-- {font-size:13px;font-family:arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif;} table {font-size:inherit;font:100%;} select, input, textarea {font:99% arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif;} pre, code {font:115% monospace;} * {line-height:1.22em;} { } p{ } { clear:both;} { padding-top:10px;font-family:Verdana;font-size:77%;margin:0;} a{ } { clear:both;margin:25px 0;white-space:nowrap;color:#666;text-align:right;} .left{ float:left;white-space:nowrap;} .bld{font-weight:bold;} { } { border-top:1px solid #666; } #logo{ padding-bottom:10px;} { background-color:#e0ecee;margin-bottom:20px;padding:2px 0 8px 8px;} #vithd{ font-weight:bold;color:#333;text-transform:uppercase;} ul{ } ul li{ list-style-type:none;clear:both;border:1px solid #e0ecee; } ul li .ct{ font-weight:bold;color:#ff7900;float:right;width:2em;text-align:right;padding-right:.5em;} ul li .cat{ font-weight:bold;} a{ text-decoration:none;} a:hover{ text-decoration:underline;} #hd{ color:#999;font-size:77%;} #ov{ background-color:#e0ecee;margin-bottom:20px;} #ov ul{ } #ov li{ list-style-type:square;padding:6px 0;font-size:77%;} #ov li a{ text-decoration:none;font-size:130%;} #nc{ background-color:#eee;margin-bottom:20px;padding:0 8px;} .ad{ } .ad #hd1{ font-weight:bold;color:#628c2a;font-size:100%;line-height:122%;} .ad a{ text-decoration:none;} .ad a:hover{ text-decoration:underline;} .ad p{ } o{font-size:0;} .MsoNormal{ } tt{ } blockquote{margin:0 0 0 4px;} .replbq{margin:4;} -->

Thanks Patrick Just the information I needed to make the decision to move to Kemah. I just requested an overland transport bid to get me away from wet, cold and windless Seattle right after Christmas. I am sure that you will enjoy Kemah and for sure you will enjoy the sailing. I have just returned from a 5 day sailing trip down to Port Aransas, Texas and it was great. We had some heavy winds and also some high seas but the ride was awsome. Let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.
