note the corner "rails" at that website. Our Cal came with corner stanchions braced forward only. I added side braces and ended up with a configuration like the pictures. Much better. Then, new lifelines with gate release ends allows the stern to be opened up for access to the stern fold up swim ladder with step pads. What a deal! And, she is still competative on the race course. I'm of your ilk, Chris. But on the other hand, Marsh has a point. I get a kick out of reading old seagoing related reference works, the variations in nomenclature across time and space are pretty wide. I confess to liking jargon. This summer I fell in love. Stopped to talk with an intellegent looking blond at my marina early one morning, she was looking at the boats on my dock. I fell in love when I discovered that not only did she recognize wooden two-master as a bugeye, but further commented that she didn't know they were built in Gloucester, and also knew that 'niggerhead' was not a racial slur. To bad she was just passing through... td From: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com [mailto:Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com]On Behalf Of Chris Campbell Sent: Monday, October 29, 2007 2:43 PM To: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com Subject: Re: [Cal_Boats] Re: Pushpit?? Re: Pushpit.. rat-lines or mast-step? ? ?

slickbutfoxbuger2007-10-30 04:39
So it's nautical nomenclature ye want..... traditional or specialized, name your poison! shall we hold the after spring, and let-go for & aft. back the stay- sail to stbd till she points fr open water hoist the gaff and run the Ensign up the roach after letting go the spring. and yes, her rat-lines had dead-eyes. with cross-trees in her tops. and even a top-sail and flying jib. of course none of this kept *Albatross* from sailing like the pig she was..... but she was my pig! but in a more modern and specialized context, i have driven an ocean- going....... Hummmm. well, one would properly never address the thing as a *ship* even though it's displacement is equal to that of a WW-2 cruiser. and compared to a WW-2 cruiser, it is much better armored against a shell, bomb or torpedo hit. however, unlike a cruiser of that time or this; one *drives* this machine. and it is not even called a ship, but rather it is called a *boat*. and by-the way, the Navy is also where i learned to *Float-Test* numerous objects. none of which seemed to pass......... too bad; not unlike float-testing witches i guess. now the Navy is a great place to learn lots of new and innovative stuff. a *field-day* is an 8 hour time period once a week that happens on every floating object in the Navy, wether at sea or in port, at peace or at war. when every sailor and most *O-Divers* (offers) on board will turn-to and clean-ship from one to da-other, bulge to head-windows, shaft-nut to sonar-dome. then there is *Cranking*. to serve as a mess attendant and or dish-washer for a given period of time. enlisted only, and is a naval tradition. then for you Boys out there, there is always the *Short-Arm Inspection*. never seen one of those, but maybe Capt. Marsh can elaborate...... lastly, but not lest by any means, there is my personal favorite. the one that you will never find written in any book, but is known to every sailor (much to the chagrin of every Command). it's sort-of a time-honored social-greeting kind-of get-to-know-ya to sailors in a new port from girls who come aboard to see the ship (not that most girls could give two hoots & a holler). it's how a sailor (dumb as a door-nob) whos been too long at sea knows if he's got a chance or not. you see, most ships don't have anything like a star-way. what they have is hatch's and ladder's. and where a sailor learns to grab the rail and just drop down the hatch with his (or her) feet on the rail for balance, Zip! most no buddy else can do this with-out braking something vital. and most women instinctually know to never inter a mans country (board a ship) in a skirt. well unless she is saying something that is.... :)(: but most young men (sailors) don't get it. until...... and it is at that point the word goes out; *sn__ch-in-the hatch*! Ok, so all of that was a bit raw. well now i find myself having to learn a whole new sort of nomenclature of a sort. it is that of *Organic Chemistry*. it's not enough that i can visualize what i want or need. i must be able to read about it, look it up, ask for it by name, talk intelligently about it with a sales rep. and if need-be, dictate my own custom blend. all of this in order to balance the *VOC's) in a given polyester risen to the solids. and then customize the lay-up process to accommodate the changes in the formulation. to do that one must *See* the actions of molecules on a molecular level exchanging places with one-another. and or exchanging atomic orbits with each other. and all of this just to get a better hull or deck. i agree with most all of you. when i was a kid i just loved to bring words to school that on one else had ever heard before. and even better, i would use those words with the Swedish or German bent i would hear in the voices of the old men down at the drydock where my Father would let me listen to the guys off the Tugs when they came in. word's like *fo-k-sol*, and *cork-en*, and *wheel-house*. *Haw- sser*, *for-ed* & of course *aft*. maybe it was just being different, or possibly i didn't like the all-to-common *speak* of the day (just as i don't now). i apologize if my kidding with my Very Good Friend Mr. Marsh; up-set anyone. i think this is a great place to talk of Sailing, and anything to do with it........ fiver ***************************** --- In Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com, "Downing, Thomas" <Thomas.Downing@...> wrote: > > I'm of your ilk, Chris. Hmmm, Marsh won't elaborate on that inspection. He also didn't "mess crank" -- he ran a tool room :-0 Well, okay, for ONE day in boot camp I did the mess crank thing -- it sucked. The rest of the time of "service week" I worked for the eye clinic :-Þ Anyway, for me, the Navy kinda bit... I was stationed in Key West in 1983 :-0 Not much to do... lotsa drinking and few women :-( Marsh slickbutfoxbuger wrote: >So it's nautical nomenclature ye want..... > >traditional or specialized, name your poison! > >shall we hold the after spring, and let-go for & aft. back the stay- >sail to stbd till she points fr open water hoist the gaff and run the >Ensign up the roach after letting go the spring. > >and yes, her rat-lines had dead-eyes. with cross-trees in her tops. >and even a top-sail and flying jib. of course none of this kept >*Albatross* from sailing like the pig she was..... but she was my >pig! > >but in a more modern and specialized context, i have driven an ocean- >going....... Your Freudian Projection isn't cute, clever, or appropriate on this venue, and is insulting to 50% of the population.

I was trying to be an equal-opportunity critic. Sorry if I gave offense. I was hoping the readers would take it as a light-hearted joke about my own schizophrenia in such matters. You'll note that I didn't venture into religion, which is fraught with even greater peril. Chris Campbell

Usually I do ignore such ignorant quips, then again, I don't want to let incrementaism slip by. And I'm still trying to figure out how "wild-eyed" is an equal slur in the same vain as "moss-backed".... Must me modern-day Newspeak.... In the end I just don't think this forum has any place for political beliefs or politics that don't concern boating in general or Cal boats in particular. Now, if we want to discuss LOST, well, could impact us all. I mean, really, who wants the UN governing the Great Lakes, Mississippi River, or any other lakes and streams - let alone our coasts?
