Mast Step Plate
Neil McBride2007-11-04 04:20
I pulled the mast off my Cal 2-29 today and will be re-rigging and
installing new wiring and lights etc. Before restepping the mast I
plan on installing the Mast Step Plate sold by Seal's Spars and
Rigging, but have a question. Do I remove the existing mast step and
them install the existing mast step onto the new stainless mast step
plate? The new mast step plate does not have anything that will hold
the mast in position so thought that might be the way to go.

Neil, you do put the old oval pedastal on top of the new steel plate,
and screw the two of them down. Make sure you seal the screws well. I
also suggest that you bring the wiring out the side/front/back of the
mast to an external hole. I don't like having blind holes inside the
mast where they are hard to inspect for leakage.

Thank you for the instructions, I like the idea of having external
wiring connections, don't want to pull the mast again for a minor
wiring problem.

Charlie,
Besides that the damn lights never work and you have no way to troubleshoot without pulling the mast. Next season I plan to have a cannon plug in the deck and will lead the mast wires to it via a hole in the mast. I just have to find a source for cannon plugs. That's what we called them in my USAF days.

PS, I just put the cover on today, officially ended the 2007 season. Now I will only see it when I remember to drive there to check the cover, BS with the yard guys, drink coffee and tell stories, check the latest rumors, etc.

I would definitely be interested in that as well. Not that my Cal has many wires going up the mast....
