Bottom paint and fairing

It has been three years since I pulled my boat and the divers said the bottom is ready to paint again, plus since I race the boat, I wanted faster! I arranged to pull the boat at a yard near my marina. They decided on using the ways. The yard agreed to allow me to do the prep work myself (unusual around here). This pass Monday was haul day. They power washed it, let it dry and paid for 4 1/2 hours to put up the tarps and have the yard guy power sand off one layer of paint. I pulled all three thru hulls, epoxied tapered wood plugs and drove them in. Cut them off less than flush, 4- layers of glass top and bottom, Filled with 403 and faired with 410. I power sanded the hull, keel and rudder to take off another layer (different color). I fill and faired for two full days, using West Epoxy mixed with 404 filler in critical spots (three small areas of delam at the keel stub joint, and 410 for small areas. Many pock marks were seen on the rudder and some on the keel and hull. All filled and faired. Re-sanded the hull twice with 80 grit. Board sanded the rudder and keel. Yesterday I repainted the boot stripe, since I had the chance. Are you tired yet? Today is clean up day and paint day. On my way there now to clean up. The yard will put two coats of Petitt Vivid White, 4-hours apart using a very low nap roller. Tommorow one more coat of paint. Wait 16 hours (reccomended)then burnish and splash! Should be a lot faster for the HOT RUM 2 next week. ps: We had 141 boats start the HOT RUM 1. Dennis took line honors with his new Farr 60, called...yep...Stars and Stripes. Here is a pic of DC's new boat. http://www.da-woody.com/07HR01/07HR011938.JPG ...my envy...http://www.da-woody.com/07HR01/07HR011835.JPG ...Downwind...http://www.da-woody.com/07HR01/07HR011584.JPG Bill San Diego 1972 CAL T/2 Elysium

We haul out every year, of necessity, so we have lots of opportunities to examine bottoms and fiddle with the paint. > The yard agreed to allow me to do the prep work > myself (unusual around here). > I've been around long enough to notice changes along these lines. My marina used to have few rules (except for banning outside contractors) but now has more and more. They don't let us power sand indoors, even with efficient dust collection systems, but we still have no restrictions on outdoor sanding. It's probably because they've got some sort of sediment collection system now in their wastewater drains to catch the bottom paint debris. It's a legitimate concern, controlling the toxic debris, but I can still long for the old days when it was "out of sight, out of mind." It won't be surprising if at some point they won't let us sand bottom paint ourselves at all. The boat owner side of me gets all grumpy over restrictions but the environmentalist side of me takes over and reminds me that pollution is not just somebody else's problem. Chris Campbell

Hmmmmm, I called today and found mine is out :-) Rudder sitting there, ready to bring home (so it doesn't freeze) and dammit, I can't get down now for a few days >:-0 Bill wrote: >It has been three years since I pulled my boat and the divers said >the bottom is ready to paint again, plus since I race the boat, I >wanted faster! >I arranged to pull the boat at a yard near my marina.
