Books: Paper or Plastic? [was Re: Capt. Joshua Slocum's Sailing Alone Around the World]

Tom cites a lot of excellent advantages for paper books over e-books.
However, in spite of being a fellow Luddite, I will point out that we must
start to consider alternative views of our world and our behavior as we
enter the shoal waters of scarce resources. Too often, people do the wrong
things with very good intentions. Sticking with paper books may be one
example; I'm not sure that's the case, but here are some points to consider:
950,000 book titles published annually worldwide
25,276 newspapers worldwide
80,000 mass market and trade magazines published worldwide
94.8 metric tons of printing and writing paper produced annually worldwide
37.8 metric tons of newsprint produced annually worldwide
The average newsprint paper mill consumes 2,850 kilowatt-hours per ton of
paper produced, and 3.56 GigaJoules per ton of fossil fuel.
Creating an electronic book reader certainly has energy costs, but there
probably is a cross-over point where it is less than producing and handling
all that paper (even if you recycle the paper which probably only happens in
a small fraction of cases). Audio CDs have a smaller energy budget than
vinyl records, and MP3s are even more energy efficient than CDs, I believe.
It's not a cut-and-dried situation, but I expect that there is a case for
electronic books to result in enormous energy and resource savings compared
with paper publication. It's a switch that can be made; anybody here using
electronic charting? (mandatory sailing content)

Excellent points, good data.
It would be good to know the uses of the paper produced as percentages:
what percent goes to books, to newsprint, to magazines, etc. And for
books, what percent goes to trade paperback as opposed to other types
of books.
I would be happy to read pulp via electronic. I also suspect that those who
invest in hardcover editions are making an investment in the future to some
extent.
Periodicals I only read via electronic as it is.
Sailing content: so do I now need to get a laptop and satellite internet for
my boat? Say it aint so...

Hello Listees,
I'm considering replacing my genoa winches with a pair of self tailers.... Looking for suggestions/recommendations on make/model, new/used,etc. Also, I'm in salt water... should I even consider aluminum or focus on chrome plated bronze?
Thanks,

laptop and satellite internet for boat?
Bruce Stirling2007-11-06 14:54 UTC
My laptop allows for broadband Internet out on the water. Cell phones, web
access, and email access on the water are luxuries that can really come in
handy. We used a hand-held Garmin to plot way points on the laptop. At
least we did on our only journey thus far along the California coast. Just
in case, we had the paper charts, too. Since we paid so little for the boat
on eBay, we allowed a little splurge for the toys. But sending email to
this group, photos to the group, or home, while on the water is a nice
instant reward that continues to boggle my mind. Accessing electronic
charts updated on the web was recommended to us by the Coast Guard after we
grounded outside the channel on our initial entry into the south bay in San
Diego. The Coast Guard used the same chart I did, but with handwritten
updates pulled from the web. They seemed surprised when I told them I had
not accessed the updated materials online. Who knew? I complained to the
marina that their chart sucked. It is a digital world.

We have replaced the primaries on Radiant with 52's, and the secondaries with 40's.
Very satisfied. Light-as-aluminum, strong, virtually no abrasion on the sheets, and look good.

I;ve been in the computing business since about '80, designing both
hardware and software and it really doesn't have the flavor that it used
to have. Maybe it's me.
But even if I am jaded, I still am occasionally brought up short by the
fantastic wonder of the actuallity: I push a button here in CT, and presto,
something happens is Tokyo. It's magic - theres no other explaination..
But I sitll ain't getting a PC on the boat! (I don't even have a GPS, but
maybe I'll break down and get one.)

Note that's 950,000 titles, which you have to multiply by the number of each title published to get the total number of books. Then there's also the amount of energy required to move the raw materials to the publishing plant, then move the published books to the point of sale or directly to the reader. I love books, and treasure my sailing books (RSC) but you have to look at the whole picture.

Self tailers are a great addition, I wouldn't be without them.
I have a set of Barient 21-33 winches on my 2-27 the size is great, I can
trim my 155 genoa in with one hand while steering upwind. Fortunately, due
to some serious design flaws, even used Barient winches are hard to find.
Barient switched to a line stripper that is made in part of a very light
duty piece of plastic which can be purchased from Australia for only $22
plus freight. So avoid used Barients with this feature. Another
consideration is the ability to pull the line in through the self tailer. I
sailed on a boat that had Lewmar self tailers that allowed the line to be
pulled in by hand while it was in the jaws, this was great when we were
racing avoiding that awkward transition. Without this capability we have
turned it into a two man job with one person pulling the line and a second
adding the cranking after the line is 80% in followed by self tailing by the
trimmer as we come back up to speed.

Hello Listees,
I'm considering replacing my genoa winches with a pair of self tailers....
Looking for suggestions/recommendations on make/model, new/used,etc. Also,
I'm in salt water... should I even consider aluminum or focus on chrome
plated bronze?
Thanks,

Yes, there is a plastic wedgie-goodie disk thingie which slips over the top rim of the standard winch. I was on a boat that had them years ago, and they worked fine. They gripped the rode like Armstrong Tires. wooops, i dated meself! (Armstrong Tires??)
BTW I've been corresponding with someone trying to sell his Cal 28 on Ebay, he has got a leak somewhere and thinks it's around his outboard well. Any ideas? Boy do I need another boat like a hole in my head, especially one down in San Diego on a mooring buoy that I can't access easily to check it out. I've given up looking at non-Cal boats, they all have stingy bunks built for little guys.

Didn't I read
somewhere about a self-tailing upgrade available for non-self-tailing
winches? Are they any good?

Self tailers are a great addition, I wouldn't be
without them.
I have a set of Barient 21-33 winches on my 2-27 the size
is great, I can trim my 155 genoa in with one hand while steering upwind.
Fortunately, due to some serious design flaws, even used Barient winches
are hard to find. Barient switched to a line stripper that is made in part
of a very light duty piece of plastic which can be purchased from Australia for
only $22 plus freight. So avoid used Barients with this feature.
Another consideration is the ability to pull the line in through the self
tailer. I sailed on a boat that had Lewmar self tailers that allowed the
line to be pulled in by hand while it was in the jaws, this was great when we
were racing avoiding that awkward transition. Without this capability we
have turned it into a two man job with one person pulling the line and a second
adding the cranking after the line is 80% in followed by self tailing by the
trimmer as we come back up to speed.

Yep, I have two of those as well. They grip very well and can be used as
self tailers, but they rely on the line pushing up the drum and gaining
friction against the bottom of the rubber. When you want to let the line
out a little you have a problem getting it to release without removing most
of the wraps.

Hi, I have Lewmar Ocean Series 30ST, 2- speed self tailing. No problem
with these. I'm glad I have 2- speed, as single speed is not enough to
get the 155% trimmed. Not sure about the modification of standard
winches. My guess is that they are not nearly as effective as the real
thing. If you don't want to spend the $900.00 each, you might try
buying used. Ther are plenty out there. Good Luck, Bill

If you can afford the Anderson's, I have heard wonderful things about them
and they look fabulous.
A good friend offered me a pair of Lewmar 16 STs for my cabin top too cheap
to pass up. Unfortunately, it was such a great improvement over my old
Barient 10s that I got all worked up and ordered new Primary and Secondaries
in matching Lewmar Chrome self-tailers. Stainless would have been nice, but
these were really cheap and should last the life of my sailing career at the
rate I am aging. Sigh.....
Although I watched ebay for a couple of weeks, I discovered that new ones
weren't much more money if you searched online. Defender has great prices
on Lewmar Winches and shipped promptly. They had a special on the 34ST,
which was cheaper than the 30ST because the 34 is discontinued and they had
a lot of them. They work absolutely wonderful and should be overkill for my
Cal 29.
The 30, 34 and 40 ST winches all share the same footprint - just internal
gearing differences. The 30s should be adequate for the Cal 29, but I'm
getting old and like things easy, so I bout a pair of 34s for secondaries
and the 40s for primaries. The 34s mounted with a bit of an "overbite" that
far back on the coaming, but they look and function great.
Single Handing is so much easier now and my crew loves the additional power
and ease of grinding in the big genoa with the 40s. All of my cockpit crew
are very smart, athletic young women, and I want them happy.

We have replaced the primaries on Radiant with 52's, and the secondaries with 40's.
Very satisfied. Light-as-aluminum, strong, virtually no abrasion on the sheets, and look good.

We have replaced the primaries on Radiant with 52's, and the
secondaries with 40's.
Very satisfied. Light-as-aluminum, strong, virtually no abrasion
on the sheets, and look good.

Hi All,
Thanks for your inputs, suggestions, and general commentary. I have begun searching for a pair of self-tailing winches for Magic. Unless I can find an incredible deal on a new pair, I'll be buying used. I have begun looking on eBay and Craigs List to see what's out there. If you run across any leads, please keep me in mind.
Thanks Again,
