Re: FW: [Cal_Boats] Cal 31 hull number
Sometime around 1979-80 Bangor Punta more or less condensed a few of
their boatbuilding companies, at that time JENSEN Marine more or less
became just CAL BOATS (formerly it included RANGER sailboats, DeFever
Trawlers, LUHRS powerboats, as well as CAL). At this time the corporate
offices of CAL were moved into the O'DAY Sailboats plant in Fall River,
MASSACHUSETTS, production of the CALs was then moved to the Florida
factory where some of the CALs and O'DAYs were already being built and I
assume the Costa Mesa, CA and Marlborough, NJ factories were closed down.
Later, in about 1984 or so production of some of the CALs was moved to
Fall River, MA and I think all production was moved there about 1-2 years
later.
On the model year designations, in the mid to late 1970's and early
1980's CAL and O'DAY had model years that ran August to July, what that
means is that the 1980 model year for instance, ran August 1979 to July
1980. That is how you have a 1980 model that was built in 1979. (My 1979
O'DAY Day Sailer was built in December 1978).

Bob,
Beautiful boat you have!
I'm trying to get mine back in shape after the PO left it unloved for a
while
here is what you show:
CAB = Cal Boats
F = ? does not say in my brakedown. only H=MKII. mine is "F" also
0059 = hull number
M=modle year format
79 = built in 1979
J = May. This is the month of mfg. They started in August so A = August
B=Sept etc
I can fax the brakedown to you if you like
My Cal 31 is hull #75 buit in '79 but all my paper work, title etc says
it is a 1980

I have seen references to the hull numbers in several emails and maybe
someone could clarify for me. My hull number is CABF0059M79J. I assumed
due to the year that it was manufactured by Jensen in Southern California
but the Surveyor said it was built by Cal Boat of Falls River Maryland.
Does that sound right? Bob Connell (Jollygood! in Olympia, Washington).
