CAL 33 who built
Rodney G Johnson2007-11-16 15:54 UTC
BANGOR PUNTA bought JENSEN MARINE in 1965, so all CALs built from 1965 to
1985-6 were built by a Bangor Punta owned company, LEAR SIEGLER bought
CAL/O'DAY in around 1985-6 and owned the company until about 1988 or so
when a group of investors bought the company only to go bankrupt in 1989.
Lear Siegler also bought the Starcraft boats division of Bangor Punta,
and the CAL/O'DAY part was actually called "Starcraft Sailboats" Division
of Lear Siegler for a while.

Two of the 3 cal 33 sailboats in our marina (86 and newer) have hull ID
beginning with CAB. One begins with STR. To me, it looks like they changed
the ID after the hull was cast. (is that the right term for producing a
fiberglass hull in a mold?) On my switch panel, it says Cal boats, two of
the other have Lear Siegler.
While all three boats look identical, some of the trim details vary in all
three boats. Some may have been owner options, or post commissioning
modifications. All three are great boats!

It was my understanding that a venture called "Little Compton Yachts"
bought the molds from Lear Siegler in the late 80s or early 90s. A
friend of mine went to the Annapolis show in that time frame and brought
me a brochure that looks exactly like the brochure my PO had with the
boat except it had "Little Compton Yachts" rubber stamped on it it blue
ink. I thought they made a few boats and theirs had walkthrough
transoms and a few other design changes.

There is one '90 something Cal 33 in oriental. The owner kept it at our
marina for a few months waiting on a temp/perm slip elsewhere on the river.
There was no "walk thru" transom. They did add a "sugar scoop" where the
bottom 6" or so creates a step, with the stern ladder vertical to climb over
the seats.(stern rail and backstay per the original design) This was the
only "obvious" change I remember. They may have modified some of the
interior, I did not go below or climb aboard to check out the deck rigging
layout.
It was also built as the full draft at 6' plus. Not really a problem in
Oriental as long as you recognize the shallow water markers (crab pots) J

The latest _Sailing_ magazine has a short article on the 50th
anniversary of Jenneau. It mentions that at one point they were bought
by Bangor Punta and that in that period, one Jenneau model was built by
Cal and another by O'Day. It goes on to say that even though it's now
owned by Beneteau, it maintains independent-company status (i.e., it's
not like General Motors, with different brand names stuck onto the same
car).

Hey Chris,
Wasn't it another Chris on the list that had the Cal 20 something that was
the "same as" the Ranger Fun?
I think this was the Jenneau Connection between Cal/Ranger/Jenneau and
another designer besides Lapworth, Holland or Hunt.
They are all great boats.
YMMV,
John

Forgot to mention, you need to scroll way down to get to the Ranger and Cal
history mentioned in the article.
