Golden Retriever Foster Care
ira reba2007-11-20 14:46 UTC
Hello Group,
I'm contemplating a year long sailing cruise beginning September or October 2008. Unfortunately, my 4 year old Golden Retriever "Mister Max" will have to stay. Would anyone have any ideas re: foster care for the time I'm away?
Thanks,

Rick, now that's a great idea, Duo of Golden Retrievers takes sailors on year long cruise. They can keep us posted on their exploits like the surfer gal with the Cal 40 in Latitude 38 who is now on some secret Atol west of the Marquesas. Check November Lat. 38. The boat's name is Swell.

Jerry,
My retriever absolutely loves the boat. The cal 29 gets a little crowded
with 2 teenage boys, wife, and 85 lb energetic dog. That's when we go out
for just a weekend. If we go out longer I have a neighbor who takes care of
him. I need the 2 teenage boys just to get retriever in and out of the
dinghy. I always put a harness on the dog to make it easier to get him in
and out of the boat, but it is still a major chore.

Rick,
My girlfriend won't let me kidnap her (our?... I paid to fix his broken leg when I dropped backwards him off the bed and his foot got tangled in the covers, @$4000 plus for orthopedic surgery, emergany room splint etc.) retriever-sheltie mix and take him sailing. Phoooey! I want to teach him how to trim the genoa and drive the boat!

I wish I could get mine to help out on the boat. He just climbs up on the
cabin top and sprawls out and sits there doing nothing with that loopy
retriever grin on his face. His other favorite spot, when we are going to
weather, is to lie down on the leeward side of the foredeck and brace
against the tightly sheeted jib and go to sleep. When we tack, he just gets
up and moves to the other side. I can't even get him to use his weight on
the windward side of the boat. He has to be the laziest animal I have ever
seen.
