How Does Ship SINK with Only a FIST size hole?

I just heard the Canadian ship that struck underwater ice SANK! Earlier it was reported the ship only had a FIST sized hole in the hull? Why would they not be able to plug this hole with a TOWEL? Why would the bilge pumps not be able to keep this boat from going down? Something doesn't sound right here. See story: http://www.thestar.com/News/article/279244
