Suggestion - Group Owner/Moderator

Bruce Stirling2007-11-22 17:04
To make additional information about Cal Boats available to the web surfing public, it would be nice if surfers could access the photos of the boats on this site without actually being required to join the group first. I think more people would thereby be exposed to the fun that are Cal Boats. Just a thought.

Nice Thought, Bruce - but I haven't been able to find a way to enable that. Not that I was aware it was disabled anyway. If anyone does know of a way, or has good reason why it shd not be done, please advise. I just checked one of my own Yahoo groups. There does not appear a way to make the separate photo files available for public viewing. Looks like the links can be made available, but not files and photos. --- In Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com, "Marshall Wise" <marsh@...> wrote: > > I seem to remember it is... Its an interesting exercise as to determine what boats were attributed to Lapworth and which are attributed to others. Accessing and viewing is fine, but I don't want non-members to have the ability to post to or delete from the list. Ok, I guess it's a moot point. There is no functionality to allow non-members to view the photos. Perhaps the membership can come up with a good way of posting photos to another site to promote Cal boats and keep the fun coming! Suggestions would be welcome. Best Cal (Scott)

Gerald Sobel2007-11-26 07:31 UTC
Scott, You're forgetting, I owned a Cal 25 briefly. I bought it from a Navy Commander in San Diego and sailed it up the coast back to Marina del Rey with one refueling stop in Newport (Neiuport?). I also raced her. I also crew on a friends Cal 25. While they are a lot more spacious than my boat, they are too big and the cockpit sits too far above the water. I prefer being low down so I can see the waves better, espially above my toes when the boat is heeled. The one thing I don't like is how the tiller seems to get in the way for the crew as you change sides, that is in the case of my short skipper friend who stands like Captain Ahab up forward, making you scramble over it on tacks. Some people seem to be able to get that boat of yours going like a scared rabbit, especially up wind, which is my weak point. I'm going to have to do something about my centerboard someday...like...make a new one! Yes the lower you are to the sea, the closer to the waves, the faster you think your going, even if you aren't! yes, but... if you go over your traffic quota it dies. If people are SO lazy they can't just join the list, they probably won't be buying a boat. Hell, you don't HAVE to get the mail... you can set the list to "no mail" and still look at the pix. I vote not to go for the lowest common denominator. At best, a website is a better idea -- something like joomla or tiny portal. Nick, are you suggesting that the delay in the Americas Cup 90'design decision isn't being caused by members of this group showing off their good old Cals to that New York Judge that's deciding the suit between Alinghi and Golden Gate YC? Gee and I thought I was skippering an America's cup boat all this time...you mean...I'm not????Bummer! I'm still trying to figure out how I can substitute a 20' deep high aspect hydrodynamic foil with a lead bullet and some anti vortec fins for my pie shaped rusty centerboard. My local Marina del Rey sailing rag has an artist picture of the new AC 90 design, very hot! It has 15' of beam, a liftable keel, and unlimited size spinnaker, and carries twice the sail area of the olde AC design. The ultimate daysailer, with a crew of 20 with no limit on crew weight.
