A very wise sailor once told me to change the bottom paint color from blue to red and back again at every bottom job. Since then I have never had to sand past the last bottom job as there is a clear indicator of where the last job left off and the next job began. I have also been able to trap contractors, (not many, but significant) who have tried to cheat me on the bottom paint applied. Good luck, Don Dutton, Cal 33 "Quantum Evolution" PS I will tell you which yards in Florida tried to stiff me if you send a personal email, not over the group. It should be the other way around, but God love those Lawyers!! Once barnacles are removed, I would suggest sanding the hull down to gelcoat, barrier coating and reapplying the antifouling of choice. Just a thought. My Cal 25 looked much like that when I acquired. Scott To: Cal_Boats@yahoogrou ps.com From: jraxter@triad. rr.com Date: Thu, 29 Nov 2007 07:05:43 -0500 Subject: RE: [SPAM]Re: [Cal_Boats] barnacles?? One word of caution. On-off or any acidic cleaner will also strip the remaining CuO out of the bottom paint. Adding another coat of bottom paint will add to the protection of the recommended coverage. Looking at the photos, it doesn’t look like there is any protection left in the remaining bottom paint anyway. For sanding, and air-driven 6” Random orbital sander (craftsmans) with 60 grit peel and stick does the job quickly. You should be able to sand this down in a day. (unless you are like me, over 50 and cannot bend, kneel or squat for long lengths of time) J A two day weekend, and a week recovery would be my timeframe. Happy bottom painting! On & Off Hull & Bottom Cleaner by MaryKate in Warminster, PA and sold at West Marine. This stuff is acid specially formulated to not harm fiberglass finishes and it will remove barnacle remains and iron stains better than anything else I have ever tried. Also very good for bird droppings. Wear a carbon mask and rubber gloves when applying, but you will be amazed at the results. I first used this stuff in Florida after returning from Louisiana with iron stains on the hull of a Flying Scot sailboat from the truly horrific waters of Lake Pontchartrain. On & Off removed the stains that Softscrub didn't even touch. I have since used this cleaner on the deck of my Cal 33 to remove the iron rust stains caused by the fishing boats grinding activities upwind of my docked boat in Moss Landing on the Monterey Bay. It removed all of the rust stains without marring the finish of my non-skid deck.
