I imagine the Mary Kate product is acidic. Apply muriatic acid to the barnacle bases and watch them bubble and smoke and dissolve. The acid dissolves the calcium carbonate that the critters worked so hard to secrete. Watch eyes and skin , nasty stuff.

On & Off Hull & Bottom Cleaner by MaryKate in Warminster, PA and sold at West Marine. This stuff is acid specially formulated to not harm fiberglass finishes and it will remove barnacle remains and iron stains better than anything else I have ever tried. Also very good for bird droppings. Wear a carbon mask and rubber gloves when applying, but you will be amazed at the results. I first used this stuff in Florida after returning from Louisiana with iron stains on the hull of a Flying Scot sailboat from the truly horrific waters of Lake Pontchartrain. On & Off removed the stains that Softscrub didn't even touch. I have since used this cleaner on the deck of my Cal 33 to remove the iron rust stains caused by the fishing boats grinding activities upwind of my docked boat in Moss Landing on the Monterey Bay. It removed all of the rust stains without marring the finish of my non-skid deck.

West Coast Sailors want to know......
How does Mary Kate behave when mixed with Vodka? I think Dan Casey spent a
year with her sister in San Pedro one weekend.

Isn't there some type of acid that can dissolve the barnacles without eating the hull?

Charlie,
I'm sure a trip to Aberdeen Proving Ground should render something suitably toxic. :-).
Or better yet, how about a 5" grinder converted to a 60 grit sander ;-) Who needs gelcoat when we have Awlgrip!
Cheers

Marsh, We sell a Mary Kate product called On-Off, which dissolves barnacles. Be careful. It will also take the galvanize off your trailer. Rubber clothes and a respirator are the uniform of the day. It should be available in most chandleries. Do have fun!

One word of caution. On-off or any acidic cleaner will also strip the
remaining CuO out of the bottom paint. Adding another coat of bottom paint
will add to the protection of the recommended coverage.
Looking at the photos, it doesn't look like there is any protection left in
the remaining bottom paint anyway. For sanding, and air-driven 6" Random
orbital sander (craftsmans) with 60 grit peel and stick does the job
quickly. You should be able to sand this down in a day. (unless you are
like me, over 50 and cannot bend, kneel or squat for long lengths of time) J
A two day weekend, and a week recovery would be my timeframe.
Happy bottom painting!

On & Off Hull & Bottom Cleaner by MaryKate in Warminster, PA and sold at
West Marine. This stuff is acid specially formulated to not harm fiberglass
finishes and it will remove barnacle remains and iron stains better than
anything else I have ever tried. Also very good for bird droppings. Wear a
carbon mask and rubber gloves when applying, but you will be amazed at the
results. I first used this stuff in Florida after returning from Louisiana
with iron stains on the hull of a Flying Scot sailboat from the truly
horrific waters of Lake Pontchartrain. On & Off removed the stains that
Softscrub didn't even touch. I have since used this cleaner on the deck of
my Cal 33 to remove the iron rust stains caused by the fishing boats
grinding activities upwind of my docked boat in Moss Landing on the Monterey
Bay. It removed all of the rust stains without marring the finish of my
non-skid deck.

Happy Holidays,
Has anyone replaced the sheaves at the top of an Isomat spar on something
like a Cal 33? I am going to attempt this daunting task. Last time I had
the mast down I could see the stainless steel axle and a slot that it was
supposed to slide up and out the top, but there were some internal aluminum
plates that were welded over the slots, on each side, up at the top.
Any experience is greatly appreciated.
This time I am not going to drop the mast but go up and tempt fate. I have
steps that slide in the track, I have a great chair and a wonderful wife who
weighs 120 pounds. Unfortunately, she does not want to tackle this project
and I cannot blame her. Last time I sent her up for a "ten minute job" it
ended up taking three hours and the wind went from calm to 20 knots. I told
her this time it might take an hour and she is afraid she will end up
spending the night up there.
(I just love doing masthead work. Kinda of reminds me of a dental implant I
had done 3 years ago.)

Once barnacles are removed, I would suggest sanding the hull down to gelcoat, barrier coating and reapplying the antifouling of choice.
Just a thought. My Cal 25 looked much like that when I acquired.

Darr,
I have a 1986 Cal 33 as well. When I bought the boat last year, I had the sheaves replaced while the mast was down. There is a hinged cover plate on top of the mast. As I remember, by removing one or two screws, you can lift and remove the cover plate. That exposes the trunion on which the sheaves ride. I think the trunion just slips out of the slots in the side of the casting.
Rigrite supplied these masts and still has parts. The boat uses the NG51 mast with, I believe, the NG2 masthead assembly. Try this exploded view.

Good Luck,
Travis
