mast hole
Jeff Baumgardner2007-12-04 05:52
So I was advised to drill a drain hole in my mast which I thought of when it rained the other
day. I drilled one a couple inches above the base ad think I hit the casting. I have a hole 1' up
where the cables come through. Where have people drilled holes?

Jeff, are you talking about a deck stepped mast? If so, as low as
possible. I put a very little mouse hole at the base of mine. Any
"stored" water in there will long term rot the base of your mast, and
increase the chance of leakage into deck if you run your cable(s)
through the pedestal inside the mast.
Cheers
Charlie

When the mast is down, I've actually made a couple quarter inch deep notches in the bottom of the mast, one on port and one on starboard sides. If your holes are 1" from the bottom, the mast can hold 1" of water below the holes. Also, make sure you do NOT caulk the base of the mast, making it watertight.

Re: [Cal_Boats] Aluminum corrosion faillure was:mast hole

Interesting article I dug up on catastrophic corrosion in aluminum assemblies. As you know a Nimrod RAF patrol plane blew up killing 14 servicemen over Afghanistan recently. It is an aircraft that the British Aircraft is trying to rebuild and modernize and sell to the US as a "new" replacement for our old and aged P-3 Orions, the old pre jet turboprop Convair Electra design. Not a good idea! Neither is it a good idea to keep flying our Boeing 707 tankers, the KC-135's until 2040-as planned- while Congress quibbles about which plane, a modified 767 or an Airbus 320, to purchase to replace them.

Some of us have found spars which look ok on the outside can be completely corroded on the inside. Watch out for weakened aluminum spreaders (I had to replace mine) which if failed will bring your
rig down an spoil your sail. Last sumer one of my competitors snapped his boom in half during a rough jibe in a race, [which I went on to win]. His boat was an aged Columbia 24. He left the race course and went down to Minney's in Orange County, and got a replacement, and was back in time for the awards ceremony at the end of the race. He reported extensive corrosion inside his old spar.

No, I'm talking about a keel stepped mast on a Cal 39. Where shoudl
the hole be drilled? I drilled but think I hit the casting at the
base.
